Permalink Garage band plug ins...

New Topic

Are there any good free or at least cheap string or horn plug in's for Garage Band? The software instruments they provide are pretty bad to my ears and I don't really want to pay $100 for a 'Jam Pack' to get a few instruments I'd like to have.

I recently started working with Garage Band to record demos of new songs. I agree, Spanky, there isn't a decent surf tone in there.
I'm running into the audio input of a G4 iMac with an adapter cable. I find if you don't use the software instrument settings, the signal is too low to be usable. I'd like to just mic my amp. I've maxed out any input levels I could find and it's still too low.
Any suggestions from anyone? Am I missing something? Do I need some kind of pre-amp for the mic?

Spanky,
Have you tried editing the pre-set guitar sounds? I've gotten slightly better results doing that. Double click the track to open Track Info. (I don't think it matters, but I started with "British Invasion".) Click the pencil button to the right of Amp Simulation and you can adjust the gain, eq and output level. Then, of course, kick up the reverb! You can save it as a new pre-set. It isn't a great surf sound, but it's closer.

The Volcanos

Rick,
The GarageBand amp simulation doesn't really come real close to trad surf tones, ie; Showman w/ 15's, but there are some cool and inspiring sounds in there, as I'm sure you've discovered.

A pre-amp is necessary for mic-ing an amp. If you have a 4 track tape recorder laying around you can use that as a pre-amp to boost the signal. Just leave it on pause and run it into the computer. Otherwise, buying a firewire or usb type is another option. Once I got a good pre-amp, I never went back to the amp sim, except for an occcasional late night recording with the headphones on to put some ideas down. I do record the bass direct due to laziness, but the results aren't as good as if I mic my liitle-ish Bassman amp.

I don't know anything the Jam pack instrument plug-ins...

Thanks, Joe.
Yeah, the simulations don't nail a good a surf tone. I'll look into the mic pre-amp. Where would I find that? Seems like the way to go. I didn't know if it would fry anything in the computer.

The Volcanos

I got a firewire-type interface at a local shop. I think they're kinda standard now. And ya, I shut down my computer before connecting it as an anti-fry precaution.

How/when did you guys record Mt. Erbus?

Hi Rick,

I had the same problem as you. I'm on a G5 and for some reason anytime I restart my computer, as rare as that is, the input level in the system preferences always resets to 0. I cranked that up all the way and Trace actually came across a decent setting. I'd post a picture of the screen shot but my internet skills are pretty weak and I don't know how to do that. Give me your e mail address and I can send them to you that way.

Not to single out Spanky, cause I've noticed a lot of people haven't picked up on this, but check out the little buttons at the bottom of each post. Okay, back to the discussion.

Hey, any GB users have any experience with this USB interface for micing a guitar amp?

Looks like it could be pretty decent and not too pricey?

I just bought the cheaper version, it's down to about $35 now, similar but no USB interface so I use a cable adapter to go into a Griffin iMic. It beefs the signal and I get less unwanted noise, it doesn't seem to alter the tone at all. Haven't use it with a mic yet. I'm going from echo to tank to pre-amp to computer.

Cool thanks!
Do you get any latency delay with the iMic?

Uh, latency? I'm new to recording but no problems that I'm aware of. I recorded Blue Star using it but before I got the pre-amp, it's in the downloads section. The pre-amp make a big improvement.

Believe me, I'm no recording expert either, but I play one on TV. Latency is the time delay that you sometimes get when recording multiple tracks on a computer, I guess if you don't know what it is, that's a good thing. Very Happy

BTW, Blue Star sounds great!! Is the rythym section from Garageband loops?

Hey thanks! I used the bongos from GarageBand, the rest of the drums I programmed on my ZOOM RT-123.
