Permalink Denver sights/sounds for a SurfGuitar101'er?

New Topic

I'll be in Denver/Littleton Sat Jul 25 and most of the 26th. Not a lot of time to be sure, but wondering if there are any surf-related things to check out? Or maybe just 1-2 spots that might be of interest?

I'm sure most/all music venues and bars are closed, but maybe a cool brewery with outdoor seating or a driving tour of The Astronauts stomping grounds? LOL I was hoping to maybe check out Adrift Tiki bar, but they are only doing curbside service a few hours, a few days per week. Any quintessential Denver food/restaurant I should check out?

I thought about heading out to Red Rocks or somewhere closer to nature, but concerned that I'd start off on a hike and never want to head back to the airport.

Hey Murph - Chris from The Aquasonics, and Texas Toast Guitars here. Not too much surf related things going on, but if you want to come by Texas Toast Guitars for a shop tour, that might be cool?!

Red Rocks is always fun, and maybe a drive by Tulagi in Boulder for an Astronauts "rememberance" might to fun too.

Adrift might be more open by then? It's pretty cool. I can't think of any food place that is a "Go-to" right now, especially with all the restrictions.

Tons of breweries, most have outdoor seating right now.

Anyway, hit me up with a message here, and we can go from there.

Hey, thanks a lot fellas... just the type info I was looking for! Arapaho Hills looks to be a few minutes from where I'm crashing in Littleton, definitely plan to check that out. Chris, thanks for the shop tour offer... lemme suss out a rough schedule and see if it may work for both of us. I just realized my flight home is at 4:30 and not 6:30, so I have less time than I thought. Cry

I may just get up super early and head to Red Rocks or Lookout Mountain Park for some hiking/views. I read about Flatirons just outside of Boulder... might be too far to drive on a tight schedule?

Thanks again!

Hi Murph,
The Royal Aces, one of Denver's longtime surf bands, will be playing at a rooftop event in downtown Denver Saturday night, the 25th, if that might be of interest to you. It's a ticketed event, and we have not been given the official word yet to release the ticket link info, but I can provide that soon if you might like to have it. And, if you're curious about the sound of the Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb, I'll have one that night.
Thanks,
John

Hey John!

YES, totally interested in catching The Royal Aces if the gig ends up with a green light. Any idea what time you will get started? Maybe Chris and Redfeather will make it out... that way you're guaranteed 3 enthusiastic surf fans in the audience. Wink Of course, if you are booking ticketed rooftop gigs, you must have a solid following already. Thanks for the heads up and definitely pass along any ticket info when available!

You gotta be careful about them rooftop gigs. I heard about a band in England that did one, on top of their own building, and never played live again. Smile

I’m an old Denver boy, and wish I could be there. As far as your visit is concerned, I’d only try to visit Tulagi in Boulder if you have a lot of time to spare. Nothing wrong with it, but you’d probably get more from visiting Red Rocks and Lookout Mountain. The Flatirons are a great sight, however, and it’s a pretty straight shot up from Red Rocks, if you take Colorado 93. IIRC, Tulagi is now a thrift store, or something similarly nondescript. When I was in my teens, the Eagles played there under another name, tightening their act before breaking out with their first single.

Enjoy Denver. It’s a great town.

Hey Murph - we're scheduled to play from 8 to 10:30 pm, and it will be a tiki-themed event. It is a very large rooftop area, but they will be keeping attendance to 75, just for their safe distancing plan. And, it would be great to have any SG 101 folks in attendance. We're just waiting anxiously for the ok to put out the ticketing info.
And, those are good words from Synchro!

Synhro - thanks for the tips! I just need to figure out if I want to try Lookout + Red Rocks, or Red Rocks + Flatirons. Two is probably ambitious and three probably not possible.

John - that time-frame is perfect and bonus points for the tiki vibe! Stoked!

I would most likely waste my entire trip at Mile High Comics, if they’re open!

Red Rocks is dead simple. Keep an eye peeled for rattlers, however. The area is crawling with them. Lookout is lovely and offers a great vista of Denver, but it takes a while to get up and down the mountain. The Flatirons are a bit of a drive, but the scenery on Colorado 93 is stunning. If I were present, I could show you Stegosaurus footprints, just off that highway.

Apologies, Murph!! The rooftop event has just been re-scheduled to Tuesday night, July 21 (apparently, there was a conflict with a wedding party!).

I'm posting the ticket info anyway, just in case it might be of use to any other SG101 member:

Awe man, that's too bad... thanks for letting me know! Hey, at least the Aces got a reschedule, rather than a cancellation!

Yes, at least we still get our "Beatles on a rooftop" gig! Although, the only similarity is...the rooftop.
