Someone signed up to this site and then used a script to generate about 400 comments to news stories containing nothing but links to the usual porn, viagra, drugs, and other nonsense. I am aware of it and I am cleaning it up. I might lock the site down for a while.

I'm not really in a humorous mood right now.

For the time being, I have turned on the security code for news comments. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I think the security code is a great idea. Most blogs have them. It only takes 2-3 seconds to fill out the security code.

Thanks, but since it was done by a single user, it was very easy to find all the comments and eradicate them. It took me less time to delete them all than it took him to post them, even with an automated script, so that makes me feel better.
I hope he had a script, as he was adding these things about once a second or even less. The CAPTCHA should slow him down or even make him want to find an easier target somewhere else.
If you see anything like this just shoot me a feedback message ASAP. Just like a neighborhood watch.

This crap use to happen to my yahoo surf group with these people creating false accounts and then they start to post spam links and info after all that I had to screen them and approve new users, it got to be a headache, why they do this beats me they need to get a life.

Exactly Kyle. We have been lucky so far. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

It's also very hard to make the call and say is this person fake or real, What I would have the new users do before joining is they are asked why they want to join the group and that's fairly easy to answer when they visit the page and say " I like surf music" so that there made my call easy and approve new accounts but then again I got fooled and SPAM WHAM that's 1 of the reasons I closed my yahoo group and spread the word to the users in my group to come over to SG101 and meet up in 1 central place

I have always wondered why we can't just send all the stuff back to them. Sort of like a return to sender thing. Let them play reformat for awhile.
I have had several virus come in on email and even some on 'click here' links from forums I have been a member of.
Computer hacking should be against the law.!!
oh right...

They're kinda like the guys who drop in on waves or the ones who want to touch your gear at a gig.
