I think "surf band-type sound" only works if you say it in a really surprised tone of voice. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

We consider ourselves as a Rock and Roll band featuring instrumental surf music. The only vocals we do are.....let's see......ummm.....oh yeah, we scream "surfin tragedy" on that tune, and the bass player and i sing "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" at the end of "Isn't Love Grand" by LSJ cause it's got THAT chord!! We used to do "Moon Dog" which had some "aahhhs" in it but our guitar player doesn't wanna do that tune anymore.Bottom line....we're a surf band that does surf music and guitar instrumentals with a Rock and Roll beat. Maybe that's why people yell at us to shut up and start singing something!! Heck, we've had folks walk out because we don't sing!! And we're ALL singers......yikes!! I remember five local girls coming in and having a drink and politely listening to our instro stuff and then asking us to play Bob Marley!! And when we didn't....they got up and walked out!!! We're entertainers and want to be entertaining and not bum people out but.....we're not busting out no Bob!! And we all love Bob Marley too! —The TakeOffs |

^ You could have at least tried "I Shot The Sheriff" (instrumental-reverb-version-sans-ganja) |

"WRSRMSI"??? I just call it "surf". But, in the vinyl bizz, it's generally called "surf instrumental". Or "surf vocal" (to differentiate). -outsides- |

For no particularly valid reason, I don't like the term "surf rock" either. I dunno, it just doesn't do it for me. I agree with Bill though. It's a good point that the term "surfer music" (and I'd add "surfing music") isn't okay to say in public. |

jack johnson is a surfer who did some tunes that were used in a surfing movie called 'september sessions', hence 'surf music' in some peoples minds. i've gotten to when people ask me what i like to play i tell them surf rock instrumentals and then they usually say either 'like the ventures?' or 'like dick dale?. at least they've moved out of the beach boys and jack johnson park.' — |

Good news for our international members. The Starbuck's Big Waves CD has been licensed for international distribution. I don't know the release date yet. Hopefully this means that the disc is such a hit here in the USA, they want to go worldwide with it. Buy Speed of Dark @ Bandcamp |
