As of right now we are scheduled to play an important gig next weekend. However, our other guitarist is lost in Europe with the travel problems and will be quarantined anyway. We are set to play as a three piece. At this point the club still has it scheduled. Our governor banned gatherings over 100 but I feel that the performance should be cancelled either way. There are confirmed cases in my area. It's here. I don't want to catch this nor want anyone else to.

What are the rest of you doing with regards to performances?

This is a great question. I almost started the same thread but got busy at home.

My group has a scheduled gig in two weeks, our first in 6 months (had to replace one of our guitar players) AND it’s at a venue that we’ve been wanting to play at since we first got together. It’s a small place, where you couldn’t exceed the state’s current 250 person limit. We don’t have a large following, so us playing won’t be attracting massive amounts of people either.

Not sure where social responsibility needs to kick in. Hard to get a read on things without some political skew thrown into the mix.

Ultimately I think the decision will lie with the venue... but given that we haven’t had to deal with something like this before, it is entirety possible that my guys may make a decision as things progress.

It's obviously a very fluid situation. I've relayed to the guys that there is a greater than 50% our show gets cancelled as several other venues we have played have shut down for the immediate future. I also believe that most will hunker and not even attend shows in the next several weeks.

We have two scheduled for 3/28 & 4/4, but I'm thinking they're not going to happen. Even if they do, I'm feeling we shouldn't take the risk. I have Lyme and asthma so I really can't risk the respiratory complications. We did still practice yesterday tho, but no one touched their faces just in case. Next week we might not even have practice.

I disagree that warm weather will slow it down in the US. In my opinion the only thing that will bring down the number of new cases is if the entire nation shuts down for six weeks, and everyone, symptoms or no, gets tested every two weeks with a 4-week quarantine system for all new cases (it can be in your house but the government needs to support that with food / water / medicine deliveries). Is this nation prepared to do that? Nope. I see the numbers only going down after everyone is exposed. When there's no one left to infect, the numbers will go down. If we hadn't dropped the ball we could have contained like South Korea - within one day of a single case there were drive thru testing centers, for example. We've had cases confirmed in the US since 1/21 and just this week started official testing, it's no wonder it's in every city now.

The Seatopians had shows scheduled in Portland and Seattle next weekend, but have decided to back out. We were supposed to play Treefort Music Fest here in Boise the week after but it has been postponed until September. Things aren’t looking good for live music over the next few months, but better safe than sorry.

I know a doctor who attended a panel with national experts in infectious disease, epidemiology, immunology, outbreak response, and COVID-19. This is the sobering perspective he shared:

At this point, we are past containment. Our containment efforts won’t reduce the number of people who get infected in the US. We are moving from containment to care.

Now we’re just trying to slow the spread, to help healthcare providers deal with the demand peak. In other words, the goal of containment is to "flatten the curve", to lower the peak of the surge of demand that will hit healthcare providers. And to buy time, in hopes a drug can be developed.

No one knows how many in the community already have the virus.

We in the US are currently where Italy was a week ago. We see nothing to say we will be substantially different.

40-70% of the US population will probably be infected over the next 12-18 months. After that, you can start to get herd immunity. Unlike flu, this is entirely novel to humans, so there is no latent immunity in the global population.

Assuming 50% of US population gets infected, that’s 160M people infected. With 1% mortality rate that means 1.6M Americans die over the next 12-18 months.

This compares to seasonal flu’s average of 50K Americans per year. The fatality rate on COVID 19 is in the range of 10X flu.

This assumes no drug is found effective and made available.

The death rate varies hugely by age. Over age 80 the mortality rate could be 10-15%.

We don’t know whether COVID-19 is seasonal but if it is and subsides over the summer, it is likely to roar back in fall as the 1918 flu did.

Delverados have nothing scheduled and we're gonna wait this out.

Other bands have quite a few gigs scheduled, and everything for the next month or two has been canceled. Gigs this weekend were canceled last-minute by the clubs, much to their own detriment btw. Restaurants, bars, and clubs are gonna take gas on this whole thing. Personally, I'm happy we didn't have to be the ones to tell them we needed to cancel; they figured it out on their own, and I agree.

I do some guitar shows with a friend who is still in the biz. The big Bee 3 guitar show in Spartanburg, SC was canceled at the last minute, glad I skipped it. The guy I usually go with drove from central PA to SC and found out it was off. Nothing the promoters could do about it, they were told they had to shut down because there would be too many people. The Charlotte NC show is rescheduled to August. Not sure about Summer Philly in July. The Guitarfest show in Greensburg PA is rescheduled, date TBA. Not sure what status of their show in Tallmadge OH is, but I don't think it looks good. Looks like Ohio is pretty much shut down right at the moment.

We're gonna have to take a deep breath and figure out something else to do for a while.
