Sad news in the norcal surf scene - Stu Brandt, drummer for Meshugga Beach Party, friend, and all around mensch lost his battle with cancer this morning.
Stu picked up the sticks for MBP in 2005, bringing with him a classic "trad" drumming style - as only someone who picked up drums in the height of Beatlemania could.
Ugh, I'm at a loss for words.
Stu, Bubbele, I'm going to miss you.

So sad! Beyond being a great drummer, Stu was a sweet and kind man. Deepest sympathies to Stu's family, and all those close to him. RIP, Stu.

I got to hang out with Stu and MBP one afternoon in California. Stu was so kind and funny. My condolences to his friends and family. And wow, what a drummer! So fun to watch him play!

Stu's passing is a real loss, he was a great guy. He had a lot of stories– he was in the middle of the NYC music scene of the 60s, as a player and sound man at the Electric Circus.
In 2003 or so he decided to get back into drumming and answered an ad by The Aquamarines. This led him to form and lead The ElDorados, and eventually join Meshugga Beach Party. He definitely stuck out from the drummers trying to play in a surf style, as someone who genuinely knew how to play trad. He always stuck with the traditional grip, and was a finesse guy, not a power drummer.
If you're on facebook, check out this video of him recording with MBP in 2011.

Such terrible news. My condolences to the extended MBP family and friends.
Stu was a great guy and an awesome drummer. I told him that with his traditional grip he very much reminded me of drummers from real hasidic bands I would see at weddings.

That’s a real shame. MBP has been a standard bearer and Stu’s contributions were not unnoticed.
