Permalink Instrumental Christmas Album suggestions (non-surf, or okay, maybe some surf stuff too)

Now that Thanksgiving is over, I think it's allowed to ask a Christmas related question. I need to expand the musical selection this year, and I've already got the Ventures classic album (and saw it posted that they had another one as well).

I searched and found there was an ealier surf Xmas album thread, so I'd like to know: what are some good suggestions for non-surf instrumental Xmas albums? Or new surf ones that haven't received much attention before? I welcome hearing about albums from a variety of styles, from rock to country, jazz, lounge, and more.

I've heard Chet Atkins made a Christmas album. I've got the Jim Campilongo album (which does have some vocals as well as instrumentals. Let's hear what else is good out there!

In the non-surf category, some acoustic finger-style guitar instrumentals

John Fahey - "Christmas Guitar Vol 1"
- "Poplar Songs Of Christmas & New Year’s"
Seth Austen - "Christmas Day In the Morning"
El McMeen - "The Spirit Of Christmas Guitar"

One of my favorite Christmas albums is "Wonderlux presents Christmas Eve". Mark Fontana of the Blue Hawaiians, and Brian Benedict, put this album together, and it has flown under the radar. Not really surf, but in the surf-intro ballpark.

The Blue Hawaiians' "Christmas on the Big Island" is another classic.

Bob

Jim Kimo West (slack key guitarist and long time member of the "Weird Al" Yankovic band) - "Kimo's Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas".

Joel Paterson is an absolute must 'non-Surf, instrumental' Christmas Album.

You can stream the whole thing on YT and probably all the other streaming services, but do yourself (and Joel) a favor and buy a copy too.

edit: PS - Yes, Chet did a great one too.

Great suggestions - and I am all for buying the CD instead of streaming, as I want to support musicians. I may stream something once to check it out, then buy the CD if I like (and rip it to MP3 to listen on various devices).

Mermen "Do You Hear What I Hear"
King of Hawaii "Mele Kalikimaka"
"Happy Holidays with Satan's Pilgrims" - new single!
Bob's "Wonderlux presents Christmas Eve" suggestion is right on.

Los Straitjackets have 2 Xmas albums,
recently released all on 1 cd.

We recorded this a few years ago using public domain Christmas songs.
You could expand on it and add songs or do your own version.
It is a free download

A favorite in our house is Tuck Andress's "Carols Hymns and Songs About Snow".

Recorded direct from guitar into the board!

All the recommendations above are outstanding. The Joel Patterson album, "Christmas Guitar", that Fady recommended, is excellent! I bought it a month ago, but just got around to listening to it. I just haven't been ready to listen to Christmas music.

Bob

My favorite!

Danny Snyder

"With great reverb comes great responsibility" - Uncle Leo

Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party

Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF

Of course, Danny! Love it!

Bob

Since we’ve crossed the line to include surf, and despite not being Christmas Albums (just a couple songs)... Snowman (aka Walkingi in the Air) is a MUST play this time of year.

Grabbing that link also tipped me off to a nice nod to Wham to boot.

BITCH BOYS!!! \m/ \m/

You’re welcome Wink

Glad you are enjoying this one, Robbie! I bought it as a digital download the year it came out and then when it was released on vinyl the next year, I bought it again. It is THAT good folks!
