I've never been a true strat fan.
I play mostly telecasters and have reserved a jaguar for surf.

However, lately I've started to change.

A few years ago I had a USA Fender Standard strat from 2012 with Fat 50's in it. I LOVED that guitar, but another player persuaded me to trade him for an American standard tele with broadcaster/twisted tele combo. I coulnd't resist.

I miss that strat.

Now I've had a few more since then, but now only have one. A Squier Classic Vibe 60's in burgundy mist metallic. I know it's not a great color as it's more purple than burgundy, but my wife has the exact same color lipstick that looks amazing on her...so it's a keeper. The sad thing is that I had a 50's CV in sherwood green that was a better player but I had to sell it to get the funds for the burgundy mist.

Anyway, fast forward a bit and I still have it. I'm putting on thick strings this week and then will be upgrading the pickups...perhpas to the fat 50's that I liked so much. Only wish the trem was likea jaguar trem.

Here's a few photos of some of the strats I've tried through the years.
The 2012 was candy cola...best color ever. Several that I have owned (squier surf strat, etc) are missing.

And here's my 9 year old with his first strat.
It was fiesta red and I changed it to red sparkle as per his request.

I had to re-do it after this pic was made and it's much shinier now.

I just finished getting this together this evening.
Picked it up from a gentleman who lives a block away from me with the intent to rework it. I recycled the DiMarzio Fast Track pickups that were in it into a different guitar, had a pickguard made, shielded everything, played with controls layout for a week or so, and committed to the arrangement you see here tonight. These are PV65 pups, master volume, master tone, and individual toggles for each pup. So far I’m really digging the bridge and neck together.

Now that is a cool guitar! Perfect redesign. I can't stand the traditional Stratocaster control layout, just all kinds of wrong. Your redesign remedies all the issues I have with the original.

Nice! Yes, getting the V control away from the bottom E will be beneficial and the mini toggles will avoid mishaps.

Happy Straturday y’all!

Here’s a ‘Strat’ I picked up recently. It’s an American-made Fender HM Strat from ‘88-’89.

Fender put these out as competitors to ‘super Strats’ made by other brands. It has a Kahler bridge and locking nut, a DiMarzio Super 3 humbucker and regular stratocaster single coils. The 24-fret neck is relatively flat, wide, shallow, and a little chunky. I wasn’t sure I’d like the neck, but the wide string spacing works well with my chubby fingers.

The humbucker is LOUD, but has a nice frequency response to my ears. I took the coil-split switch, which is DPDT, and re-wired it so that in the split position, the single bridge coil stays on when paired with the mid and/or neck pickups. I swapped the mid and neck pickups so that combination of the single bridge and neck pickup is noise canceling.

I see that Fender has put out a new limited edition HM Strat this year. I hope it sells well for them.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.
Bringing instruments back to life since 2013.

Made this yesterday for Straturday but posting today.
