Lee passed away yesterday. A fixture in the music biz for five decades. For we who are fans of instrumental rock, he is very important for his work on the early Duane Eddy sides. He co-wrote Rebel Rouser, Three Thirty Blues, Cannonball, The Lonely One, Stalkin, Moovin N Groovin (we cover that one on our latest cd). Duane's Lp "Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel" was the first Lp I ever bought..still have a copy on my desk. Released in the late 50's, it was a musical window for what was to come (surf music) in the 60's. The Beach Boys took the opening guitar figure from Moovin N Groovin and used it as the opening to Surfin USA. Duane's band at that time was killer with the late great Steve Douglas on sax..another icon. Some may not know these tunes, but if you play surf, you have a musical debt to Lee and Duane...

He also wrote Baja and at least one other tune that the Astronauts recorded. Title escapes me now. Lee Hazlewood released an interesting CD recently. I've played a few tracks from it on my radio show here in Milwaukee.

R.I.P. Lee Hazlewood
He wrote "Baja", "Movin", "The Hearse", "El Aguila", and "Surf's You Right", which were all recorded by the Astronauts.
He got quite popular in Sweden and lived for several years in Stockholm during the 70s. Here he is with dog and lady friends at Stureplan:

He also wrote "These Boots are Made for Walkin" and had an excellent album with Nancy Sinatra. "Some Velvet Morning" gives me the shivers every time I ear it

I love "Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel" and yet was not aware of Lee Hazlewood or his tremendous contributions to instrumental music. Three-Thirty Blues is a real standout and one of my all-time favorite blues performances. This is indeed a real loss.

I think the late, great Rip Thrillby of The Penetrators said it best: "Lee Hazlewood was one guy who must have really enjoyed the '60s!"

He also wrote the Astronauts song Batman, not the tv show song.
Thank you very much Lee, for all you did.

Unfortunately Jeff, that's not saying much as far as I'm concerned. Batman is one bore fest if there ever was one. It's well played and sounds great on The Astronauts album but man...
The Hearse on the other hand...

There's a story that B.B King liked 3:30 Blues as well and told Duane so backstage after a show. The tune is titled for it's elapsed time.

Those Astronauts songs were brilliant in their simplicity, beauty, and power. Thanks Mr. Hazlewood.

If you want to hear a version of "Some Velvet Morning" that gives you the shivers, get a hold of the Vanilla Fudge version. Here's a brief sample, but it doesn't show off the hard hitting dynamics that they get into http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=h6me2ryzmpdkf8wo7wjmiat&z=MP3&r=20.asx

Nancy and Lee is a phenomenal album. The aforementioned "SVM", plus "Sand", "Summer Wine", "Sundown" etc. It has always reminded me of a trippy Star Trek/Wild, Wild West episode that was never filmed. Has that Kirk with the alien babe vibe. Falls into the "100 weirdest albums bought by unsuspecting middle America" category.
