Permalink Jaguar project gone awry

New Topic
Goto Page: Previous 1 2

Thanks for the tip, Surfadelphia. I looked up the Fender American Pro bridge at Darren Riley (who I find to have fair prices and good service), and it seems those bridges are basically the Mustang design but with a 9.5 inch radius. I'm not sure of the neck radius of the Classic Player, but it may be 9.5. Some people are happy with the Mustang bridge on a Jaguar, others hate it - I don't notice a difference in tone, but it helps keep the strings in place because I really thrash on them when I play.

Fender also has a Jag/Mustang bridge that is a hybrid of the traditional Jag and Mustang bridge. It is basically a Jag bridge with smaller Mustang type saddles, but the individual saddles are adjustable for height like a Jag bridge. One issue with the hybrid bridge is that the string spacing is the slightly wider Mustang spacing which sets the E strings a bit too close to the fingerboard edge for many. That bridge is pretty reasonably priced at under $30.

Matching headstock would be very cool! I didn't do anything with the rhythm circuit controls. I thought about getting an American Professional Jaguar switch plate, which has just a single switch, and making it a cut-off switch, but it didn't seem to be worth the added cost. I use a pedal tuner and that functions the same as a cut-off switch. Another idea would be to have alternate wiring so that the pickups are wired in series, and then use the switch for that, but I wanted to keep it simple. So, I went with what I did. On Danelectro U2 guitars the pickups are wired in series. So, with both pickups on the sound is louder. That's kinda cool and I love Danelectro guitars (and basses), but, again, I wanted to keep it simple. Regarding roller saddles, the StayTrem bridge is excellent and my Jag stays in tune no matter how much I use the trem. My Mosrite has roller saddles, but it goes out of tune easily. I still love my Mosrite, but it is what it is. If Fender used a bridge more like the StayTrem, I think it would be popular.

yeah TomH I think I'm going to try this modification that you came up with here.

I have a 1990's Red Jaguar (Made in Japan) with matching headstock like I suggested before here. It's a horrible sounding tone for whatever reason. But I like the lipstick pickups vibe you came up with.

I guess my question is did you try the original circuitry first with the lipsticks before trying out your Mosrite setup?

But these lipsticks would look really cool with a matching headstock I think.

No, I didn't try the original circuitry first. The Telecaster 3-way switch prompted me to re-wire everything. The 250K pots and the .022 capacitor are also part of the equation, in addition to the lipstick tube pickups. Since, I was already swapping the pickups, pots, cap and switch, I wanted to also get rid of the more complicated circuitry.

My first Jaguar was a MIJ red one with matching headstock, like all the equipment I have ever sold, I regret getting rid of it! Good luck on your project!

I looked up the Lipstick pickups on eBay, not too expensive to pull off.

I saw there is a Jaguar tail piece that looks a lot like the lipstick pickups where you put the strings through, that would look cool too.

I think the above tailpiece would look really cool and the whammy bar looks a little better design and functionality wise to me. It would match the chrome lipsticks as well.

Has anyone used the above tailpiece before looks like it might be a problem installing this without a router job taking out wood ...yikes Confused

My red Jaguar with the with the matching headstock has funky resistors between the three switches I never saw that before. Could be why it sounds so bad, sounds more like a Les Paul with a distortion pedal. Its a mod the original owner made. I'm thinking of pulling that out and put in a new three way switch. The try the lipsticks later. Will try the Mosrite wiring later If I don't like the original Jaguar wiring with the lipsticks.

OK could there be a way to have the original Jaguare wiring and the new set up? Have both setups. thinking Whatever Cool

I'm thinking of combining the original Jaguar wiring and Mosrite type wiring together with some kind of switch to go back and forth while playing.

That's a Fender Mustang tailpiece. Look it up, you'll see how the routing would need to be. You could make it work, anything is possible, but it's not a direct replacement by any means, biggest issue being the length of space from the bridge to the tailpiece, being shorter on the Mustang.

And back to the original thread topic... Very cool jaguar project! I'm sure it sounds awesome. Nice work!

thanks Sandbug - I thought maybe that might be the case. I like the look of it though - might have to router out some wood ...yikes

I found this piezo bridge - might be for e Les Paul - does anybody use this on Jaguars already or is it the wrong size etc

Looks interesting - would be cool to have a acoustic type sound by switching etc...Dunno

My idea is to hot rod my a Jaguar I have with better parts etc I was trying to find a better bridge with roller saddles if that possible 0 I can't find info on that I could have swore somebody on SG101 did that already, but can't find anything/

But I think the Lipstick pickup idea TomH came up with along with this replacement Mustang Tail Piece would look totally cool together.

Found this T-O-M Bridge, might use this - but rather have a roller type

That imitation Mustang tailpiece for sale on ebay is presented oddly because most of the pics are showing it upside down and only the last pic shows it right-side up. And it's also incorrect in calling it a bridge, because it is only the vibrato tail piece and you'd still have to get a separate bridge.

And it would be a complete nightmare to replace a Jaguar vibrato (aka tremolo) with a Mustang one, because you would have to rout out new holes for the Mustang piece and fill in the big cavity left by the Jaguar assembly. The only good news is that the holes for the bridge post thimbles would be in the same spot for both.

But a Jag bridge with roller saddle would be cool if you could find out that would work - depending on the post spacing, you might be able to find a roller bridge that would fit those posts.

Thanks edwardsand

Yeah I noticed that right after my last post. I actually did find a Mustang with that tailpiece on it etc , , , Yeah it looks like I would have to deepen the square hole under the Jag tailpiece to get those posts to fit in there, still looking at that.

Ahhh do I really want to router that guitar to do that Laughing But that Mustang tailpiece would look cool with the Lipsticks and it looks like its a better design to me. The Jaguar needs to be greased a little to work well ….ahhh tough call. Still thinking about that.

This Jaguar is such a basket case any mod would be good I think. It has resisters on the three switches that the previous owner must have put on there, really bad surf tone right now. never saw that before.

If nothing else the lipsticks look cool on a Jag.

Those lipsticks do look cool, though they leave too much space in the pickguard for my taste. A custom pickguard would fix that of course, but I wonder how Danelectro spec lipsticks would fit in there (I don't know if they are the same size as the strat size ones).

The lipstick PU's should be standard on this guitar! WOW!

I wonder how Danelectro spec lipsticks would fit >

Danelectro pickups are longer and wider. They might fit okay - it would be close; however, I'm certain that a Danelectro mounting bracket would be too high. The nice thing about the strat-style pickups is that the mounting bracket is not very high, since it's intended to screw into the bottom of the pick guard, instead of to the pickup cavity in the body as I did it.

Just FYI, when I screwed the pickups down into the pickup cavities Jaguar-style, I used small screws with vintage Fender rubber washers that I had from an old Fender project for adjustment. The pickups's height adjustments work fine.

^ Yeah better tone screwing it into the wood I would think. The pickguard probably vibrates a little if its attached to it.

Hey every body, I found this video of a guitar I remember as a kid hanging in a store once. I knew this Lipstick pickup idea reminded me of something I saw before. This is a reissue. I don't like the wood bridge but this machine has some Surf vibe to it. They say the body is too small, never played one before. And its really light as well, probably not enough mass for Surf. the Jag probably out does this axe though.

Might be a alternative to kit bashing a Jaguar.

This Danelectro Dead-On 67 goes from about $300 to $400.

Anybody have one of these? How do you like it

I gotta hear more from this Jag!

TomH wrote:

Just did the changes that Lee suggested. Big improvement! Thanks again for that. The pickups are louder, but now they also seem a bit more powerful.

Yeah I like to hear this axe in play too, the Lipstick Pickups are pretty cheap to switch out.

I'm ready to chop up a Jag right now Cool

I think it needs a real Fender Jag just for the heavier wood then a squire with these pickups, just a idea that the tone would be sacrificed with cheaper woods in the Squires. I will weigh them both soon to see how much difference in weight, it seems to me the Fenders are heavier to me,

P.S. Yeah I weighed the Squire and Fender Jaguar's the Squire was heavier believe it or not. I thought it was the other way around. But I like the Fender what ever wood its got in it. will check later
