We have a show on tonight, and after loading the truck and so forth, now sitting here with a drink in hand, it got me wondering what other people do prior to a show, if anything at all... - Pre Gig Rituals - What are they? For me I usually have a JD & coke (1) after loading all the gear into the truck and then one (1) after unloading, set up and sound check is completed... you? |

I was in a punk band that we would always wacth a mixed tape of 77 punk bands from the UK. The Clash, The Buzzcocks, The Jam, Siousxie, that would get me all pumped. On the other hand my bass player would do mad bong rips. |

For me it's load in, get set up....got 10/15 minutes to show time so i get some ice water and start getting edgy so i head outside to a dark quiet place and pretend it's 4:20 in the afternoon......then head back in reeking!! so they say,....tune up and start playing surf instrumentals for 3 hours.....cool. I love it and am so lucky to live in Paradise and play surf music. After the show, the bass player, John Hunt and i always have a pau hana beer......of the Mexican variety. One of the reasons I started this thread yesterday was because I was reading about a group here in Sydney called 'Sneaky Sound System' who have the ritual/habit of going out to a really top class restaurant for a slap up meal before every show, the whole band. It just got me to thinking about people's funny habits/rituals when doing things or before a show. |

This is a plan our singer uses, sometimes it just doesn't work out.
I like to get there early to check out the backstage facilities and how the load unload is going to go. |

Leather seating. Thats cool!!! Well, since I'm a home player I usually start my gig ritual with staring at my Fender gear, than after that I stare at it some more...untill I can't take it anymore and flip switches and grab a pick. The crowd (in my mind) at this point is usually going WILD! And I mean WILD! The first note I play and its all over. The gig has begun. Its like bathing in reverb Oh, and I'm usually pretty hopped up on tea at this point If I ever get a Jaguar and a Twin I may explode Surfs UP^ |

Good list LHR! For us it set up get ready..play..knock it down then we can have a bit of liquid recreation if desired...funny, when I was playing more blues/rock etc..I could do the shot or two of Crown before playing..for surf..I gotta be straight... — |

I generally tend to eat really greasy food, get a few drinks in me before we hit the stage, and then have as many beers as I can get for free while onstage. Of course, if you take out the stage part, that pretty much sums up my daily routine. Oh, then I do a lot of blow. ~B~ |

we once played with a prog sympho band (20 minute songs, you know the drill) who came to our dressingroom pregig and asked if we could quiet down. it was bothering them in the next dressing room. their pre-gig ritual was a 30 minute band-collective meditation session. Rules to live by #314: |

Yeah, I've experienced that for myself more than once, too. Still I think it's better to do a couple of major screw ups and rock out, than playing somewhat stiff and uninspired during the entire set. — |

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a couple before the show but mainly I /we get going stronger or better by feeding off the crowd, especially if there's a crowd getting into it, either on the dance floor just doing their thing, not really caring what we play, just as long as it's in the zone. Cheering, whistling and yahooing after songs/tunes brings you back next week. Once I had a few too many and broke strings on all 3 guitars I had set up within the space of a bout 1/2 an hour, I didn't feel real good after the set either, which made for an interesting time changing strings, especially as 2 of my guitars have Kluson machine heads, they're a real bastard when you're three sheets to the wind in low light with people breathing down your neck, waiting for you to get back up, when all you want to do is chuck the damn things in a bin and go have lie down. Which brings me to another point - Sperzel tuners are gods gift to guitarists. |
