Actually this is relevant to the Revels, so sort of pre-surf instumental music. The songs occur embedded in Kent McKenzie's movie The Exiles, which is a sort of docudrama about Native Americans in L.A. in 1960.

I haven't found a list yet of everything used in the movie, but it includes the Revellion (Hafner) and the Monkey Bird (Hafner). Comanche (Hafner) was written for it, but not used. I think Revellion is sometimes credited instead to Norman Knowles, the saxophonist of the Revels.

About the movie (which I haven't seen):

Wow, who would have thought? Thanks for the links!

The Exotic Guitar of Kahuna Kawentzmann

You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.

This has certainly piqued my interest, thanks for the links.

I'm going to look for a DVD of the movie, although it does sound pretty depressing. I think there's a reference to the movie in the Revels CD liner notes. It just had never occurred to me that it was something you could watch.

I watched it this weekend on DVD, well I saw the last half. Very good, beautifully shot, lots of great Los Angeles shots, especially around the old Bunker Hill. I didn't know about the music until it was over but I did notice a lot of Tequilaesque music so I paid attention to the credits. I didn't think it was depressing at all but then I find Adam Sandler movies depressing.

I've also been told by others that it's not depressing, so I intend to give it a try soon. The depressing/not depressing aspect may depend on your point of view, however. My take on that is probably from references to the situation of the Navajo exiles in LA in one of Hillerman's Navajo mystery novels.

The Tequila like music was probably the Monkey Bird aka the Conga Twist. It's on the Revels CD (essential listening for any surf fan) and you can maybe find it on line. For a while there was an unofficial, illicit copy at one of those "no one here but us monkey birds" sites on MySpace, but it was caught and cleaned up. While it was there I included it in my Torquay-Tequila-TorChula MySpace playlist. Another one of this sort is a rare Rhythm Kings cut called Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, available mainly on Las Vegas Grind Part 3. A minor genre of instrumentals: conga music.

As I understand, Tony Hilder provided the music for the film. Does anyone know if a soundtrack was released? The Revels were recording for Hilder's Impact label at the time.
