Permalink Blackface AB763 to Brownface 6G14 conversion?

New Topic

I've heard a ton about how easy and fun it is to mod a silverface to blackface specs, but is it possible to convert an AB763 to a 6G14? Not 6G14A.

I ask, because I want something just like this, except with that older circuit. Specifically if there’s any practical way to convert this item:

https://reverb.com/item/16417139-custom-built-original-usa-parts-1965-black-face-fender-showman-combo-guitar-amp

EDIT: I’m not a tech (yet!) and would not understand that kind of answer. I’m curious if it’s possible. I’m not going to buy this thing even if it is, it’s kind of question for the future. (Just had to drop $15k on cat medical costs!) I’m also aware that other forums are more focused on amp builds, but I was curious if anyone here had insight first.

My amp tech did something called the brownface bassman mod to my blackface Bandmaster just to the normal channel. Pot and resister value changes were made along with eliminating the bright switch and adding a presence control where the ground switch was in the back. Running on 5881's now. It's a darker and warmer amp now with a bassman transformer. It's a lot louder than my 63 Bandmaster and much different characteristics so it's hard to compare. It wasn't an expensive mod. The changes to the negative feedback circuit makes it very sensitive to the presence control.

Hey that Bandmaster mod sounds cool!! Darker and warmer sounds great.

And thanks tqi, I figured there was a reason I hadn’t heard of anyone doing that. I’m very impressed that you’re building a 6G14!!!

Major mods will be needed ... better to clone it ... Silverface to Blackface is easy cause MIT folks didn't know what they were doing ... but Blackface to Brownface is in Leo Fender level ... completely different animal.

When you have to shoot ... shoot! Don't talk.
