Does anyone have any experience with the Dr. Z "Z-Verb" stand alone reverb unit? I am looking seriously at one. Unfortunately it's the modern situatio where I can't hear it beforehand. I know Dr. Z makes rugged, quality stuff, but I don't know how well the reverb unit performs. Any advice?

No first hand w/ Dr. Z Z-Verb, but with Dario (Gomez Amps) going to one at a time type custom work, I'd certainly recommend also checking out Texotica.

Hi. I live near Cleveland, which is where Dr. Z amps, etc. are made. Until their owner sadly passed away last year, Heights Guitars carried Dr. Z amps. They had the Dr. Z reverb unit in the store at one time and I wasn't very impressed with it. It was fairly dry for a reverb unit and the reverb wasn't very strong. The same can be said for the reverb in the Dr. Z amps that I tried, including the EZG-50 model, which is supposed to emulate Fender black-face reverb. After saying all that, the tone of the Dr. Z amps is quite good. The last time I saw Webb Wilder, they were using Dr. Z amps. It's just the reverb that I wasn't impressed with. Hope that helps!

Not a bad unit, but it lacked the typical drip most Surf players are after.
Fender RI units can be had for a fair price if you are patient. Some people pile on the RI because they're not hand-wired (PC boards, etc.) but they're the closest to a vintage I've heard.

I have a Z-Verb and it is plenty good enough for surf guitar playing. No complaints whatsoever.

I believe that Gary of The Intoxicators uses a Dr. Z Reverb Tank. Say what you will, but there is no denying the amazing sound Gary gets from a Jaguar into a Dr. Z into a Twin Reverb. Listen to him and you will realize that the person playing the instrument has MUCH more to do with that sound we love than given credit for.

Actually, Gary uses a Guyatone reverb unit. He does make it sound hot! You are dead on about the player making the biggest difference!

Necro-bump
Couldn't find much else about the Z-Verb so wanted to bump this old thread. Some say it's good for surf, some say it's not... any more first hand experiences in all this time? Most search results here just direct me to the sales forum, so I'm guessing it doesn't quite match up to other tanks? Years later and there's still not much in the way of video or audio clips online.

Hey Snuf, I was using one about a year ago - wasn't too impressed with it. It will drip, and is very smooth sounding, but I think that's the problem: it never managed that slightly gritty sound that F type verbs are known for. It would be extremely good for recording I suspect, but in a live situation (if not mic'd and running through a PA) it seems to get lost a little.
Here's a clip of it being used live last year during an in store. That's the sound straight from the amp, not mic'd.
