Permalink Vox AC15C1-TV demo

I just got an AWESOME 2014 Vox AC15C1-TV Limited Edition - bought it used from Guitar Center, but it's basically mint. LOVE THIS AMP! Not necessarily the best surf amp, but it could do alright. Here I'm playing some Shadows songs through it (The Frightened City, Kon Tiki, 36-24-36, The Savage and Peace Pipe) and then messing around a bit at the end. Hope you like!

That's neat!

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

That would make a great live amp. Those Vox gizmos have a unique metallic quality to their attack (not as in heavy metal) that really cut in a mix and stand proud. Plus at 15w they start to growl at a reasonable volume, which is really ideal IMO. plus, it looks cool as %@&#.

Thanks, all! Mr. Delrin96mm (funny, those have been my absolute favorite picks for something like 25 years now - I'd be completely lost without them!), special thanks for your comments! I'd say that the things you bring up are all very valid - yep, all those things are not quite right! However, I've been playing the Shadows for many, MANY years, so I've learned to adjust both my left and in particular my right hand with different amps and thinner strings to compensate. Having a fair amount of experience with both Greenback and Alnico Blue speakers, I'd say there's absolutely no question that the Alnico Blues are better speakers for this kind of a music, and especially the Shadows. It's much easier to dial in the exact right tone with those, and the sound is more pleasant, with sweeter highs in particular and a bit less 'raggedness' that is there with the Greebacks. But the Greenbacks are still great speakers and can you get 80-90% there. Pretty much the same thing goes with thin vs. fat strings: it's just easier to get the right tone with fat strings, and in particular to play in the right way. It takes a much more delicate touch with thinner strings to make it sound close to the Shadows originals. Finally, as far as the built-in reverb, I do like it a lot! It's much better than I expected, but there's not quite as much of it available as there is on most Fender blackface amps. Still, it's nice to have it!

I hope to record a few videos today playing the Shadows on a Strat with fat strings and with echo, and will post it here when I have it. Thanks again, all! I'm really enjoying this amp! So much fun!

Congrats on a very cool new amp. Regarding the AC15 reverb. The stock tank is a 9" shorty and actually sounds decent in Ivan's demo (fine playing by the way). That being said, since there's plenty of room in the cab, I wonder if the reverb would sound even better with a 17" pan? I think the proper 17" replacement pan is a 4EB2C1B and both Accutronics and MOD use that same number. For around $20.00 or so, it might be worth checking it out.

Beautiful... They sound so nice. I have the AC15HW1X (handwired series) and although it mostly collects dust I WILL NOT sell it. It sounds so amazing. Even to keep around for a studio recording secret weapon it pays its dues!

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I love the Shadows and the Hank Marvin/Vox sound, so getting some feedback from someone who knows the music and the amps really well is a huge help. I'm looking forward to the new videos with echo and fat strings!

Thanks! Here you go! Hope you enjoy.

If you happen to see this message before you record the videos, is there any chance you could play "The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt"? It's one of my favourite Shadows tunes and I'm trying to learn it at the moment, so maybe I can pick up a trick or two from watching your fingers.

Unfortunately, I didn't see this until after I recorded the video - sorry! (I actually don't think I play The Rise And Fall.... particularly great or even quite right.)

It may have been back in 2014 or 2015, but Sweetwater was blowing these out on Black Friday for dirt cheap. Always regretted not picking one up then, and am reminded all the more of that hearing you play on it. Not that I could hope to make it sound anything as nice as you have done, but it certainly sounds like a great amp.

Bravo Zulu! Cool

Wonderful to hear that through that amp. Yes I do prefer your other tried & true echo setup as better for Shadows' stuff though. I think I've probably heard you most with that EFTP setup, or some patches in another Zoom pedal perhaps (?). But the amp sounds good, nice aesthetics too. Good score.
Thumbs Up
