I got a wonderful surprise tonight - I got to hear one of the best new surf bands in quite a while, as far as I'm concerned. Their name is Humanga Danga, and they're from Ghent, Belgium. Their lead guitarist Stefan Valenberghs and his girlfriend drove from Ghent to see The Space Cossacks in The Hague, Netherlands in June, and I had a very enjoyable (and lengthy!) chat with them after the show, in the middle of a town square with a beer fest going on around us! Stefan just sent me the Bandcamp link to the band's new EP, and all I can say is, I'm blown away! This is just fantastic stuff, everything I love about Euro surf - highly melodic with a lot of exotic touches and melodies, reflecting various world and ethnic influences in their music. Their musicianship is of the highest quality, too, with Stefan's lead guitar playing seriously impressive, possessing skill, expressiveness AND tone! I just love it!

To get back to this EP - man, I LOVE IT! I realized that "Balkan Brawl" reminds me a bit of the Barbwires' "Searider" album, very high energy AND melodic - and just super-thick! And the only cover on the EP, "Kaşik Havasi" has a bit of the Los Twang! Marvels vibe from their own debut EP, especially with that organ - something like "Cannonball" (attached). Man, Humanga Danga is like the SuperEuroSurf band! It just checks off all the boxes for me! So good!

These recordings sound just like the Beat Tornados, at least on first listening. This was exciting because The Beat Tornados were brilliant, witty and joyful. As the Beat Tornados didn't sound like any other band, I'm surprised that Humanga Danga is not their reincarnation. Doesn't matter, this is fun stuff and I'm going to listen to it until it becomes too familiar to actually hear, just as I did with the Beat Tornados.

@Readfeather: "Kaşik Havasi" (by Siluëtler from Turkey) is written in 9/8 - or at least, that's how I count it (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5... so the '&' after the 5 is dropped). Awkward at first, but after a while it becomes natural:-).
