G'day from Australia,
I believe this is my first post here after lurking for a long time. I'm looking for a bit of help with designing a logo for our newly established instro/surf band. I've had a good search thru the forums and have seen a number of brilliant band logos. Are there any designers on board here or can anyone recommend someone to get in touch with to get a logo done?
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to SG 101, damn glad to meet you! There's a lot of folks here that can answer any question. I'm certain someone else will drop by soon with a great answer.

Thanks for the warm welcome tahitijack. Looking forward to hear from anyone that can help with designing our logo. Even someone starting out/part timer. Would love to see what they come up with.

Welcome, Kev!
I know a lot of people use various formats including photoshop and the font selection is rather large. If you have access to anything like that or publisher, you could run through the myriad of font styles. Some people even invent their own font by uploading samples from old-school advertisements. I know that doesn't help with your question, but it gives you some idea to start searching for a style you like. Other than that, I do know that there are several on this list who create posters and logos and they'd be glad to help.

Hiya Kev. Have you thought about what kind of image you want to get across? Using the logos on this page as an example:

This is your classic California vibe. This says trad, period-correct tunes, and maybe some hot rod influence.

This is a more fun, cartoonish feel. Probably a bit looser, more "revival" and less strictly vintage-sounding. Possibly more of a tropical/tiki/lounge/exotica/kitsch vibe.
Then you've got logos that have more of a atomic/space-age feel; logos that suggest more of a sleazy/spooky/horror image; ones that are more of a classy/manufactured late 50's thing; psychedelia - spy - garage rock - the list goes on. There's an opportunity to give people some clues to your sound, if you want to.
Of course these are just my opinions, and people can interpret logos differently!
You mention seeing some band logos that you like - maybe you could give some examples?

Thanks guys for your input...
To answer your question Martin, I'm thinking of a little logo/caricature that would be recognisable and be used in a variety of styles for posters etc. down the road. As well as a font for the band name that would used for such things as drum heads/bumper stickers.
Off the top of my head, ones that stuck in my memory were the 'Aquasonics' and the 'Aloha Sluts' had some pretty professional looking cartoon posters done. Those are fantastic but further down the road for us - just want the simple recognisable character first. I like the 'Verbtones' clean simple look with their advertising. (my apologies for all the great band logos out there I didn't mention.
The bands' name is 'The Frothers'. Derived from a pretty common surf term used down here in Margaret River - the surf was really 'frothing' today. One of the guys in the band came up with a logo of a little caricature but it was too reminiscent of the Surfy Bear logo (which I have built a couple and use). This harder than writing and practicing tunes........

I read them the opposite way around. The gradients and textures make me think the top logo is more modern. The hand-drawn lettering on the bottom is straight throwback to the likes of John Severson and Big Daddy Roth, pure trad.
