I just noticed that Guitar Fetish has released some new "Surfy" Strat pickups...
"'64 Stagger Vintage Grey-Bottom boutique Strat Set- Surfy!!"
http://store.guitarfetish.com/64stvigrbost.html
Also available in Hot and Overwound flavours...

The Guitar Fetish web site reads like a J. Peterman catalog (or maybe an 80's DAK catalog, anyone remember those) but the pickups sound great, are cheap and he actually has some non cookie cutter stuff too.
I've used their Liverpool Filtertron-esque humbucker pickups in a cheap-o hollowbody and their Fatbody Tele pickups in my Franken-Tele and they are both excellent sounding.
GFS came out with Strat and Humbucker sized Lipstick Tube pickups back in December and I got one for my 1980's Hondo Dano Longhorn copy (it originally had a Demarzio Humbucker in it... why would they do that?!) That guitar finally sounds as it should (Epic era Link Wray.)

Will never understand why sites selling pickups don't have some type of sound samples. I'm not gonna buy them, install them, to see if I like 'em. I want to hear those lipsticks though.

They have samples up for some of the other pickups (Liverpools, Nashvilles) hopefully they will get something up for the rest of them eventually...

I just installed a set of the '64 Staggers. They sound great to me! Hard to beat at half the price of others.

12 year bump!
I have a GFS Strat that I bought on clearance a few years ago. It has a great neck and plays well, but the stock pickups are kind of disappointing. I had thought about buying a Fender pre wired pickguard, but it seemed like overkill for a $100 guitar.
I got a set of these pickups and a replacement wiring harness for just shy of 80 bucks and it's been a huge improvement.
I ordered these with the Gfs Kwikplug system and installation was very easy. I did have to drill the holes larger for the pot shafts, but other than that all that's needed is a Phillips head screwdriver and a crimper for the ground lead.

The "Surfy" claim is from Guitar Fetish. I just think they're a decent budget replacement set.

How would you describe the sound of the pickups and how they improve things? Any idea how they compare to specific fender strat pickups, like the Tex Mex set?
I've got a cheapo strat copy lying around and am considering putting some decent pickups in it to make it worth playing.

The stock pickups were very harsh and cheap sounding. These have smoothed out the sound. I don't think I would even try and compare them to high end Fenders.
Maybe more like going from a Squier bullet to a MIM.
I did play the strat back to back with my Jag last night and the pure vintage 65's in the Jag ate these for lunch.
