If you missed getting one of these shirts at SG101 con, order one from hi tide recordings: https://hi-tide.us/listing/620705674/surf-guitar-101-2018-t-shirt —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

My only problem with the convention is that I had so much fun that having to go back to work today really sucks. Big thanks again to Jeff and everyone else who made it happen and to all the folks who were so hospitable to our Seattle contingent. —Four String Fender for The Delstroyers & The Woodhavens Last edited: Aug 07, 2018 15:07:41 |

Urban Surf Kings California a-Go-Go tour USK (Rev, Inky, and Crash) left Halifax International Airport on the morning of Aug 1, switched planes in Montreal, and landed at LAX around 5pm. Got to our accommodations in Long Beach, and ate at a fabulous Mexican restaurant right near us. Thurs, Aug 2 Took the train to Hollywood for a day of tourist fun, the highlight being the Batman ‘66 exhibit at the Hollywood Museum. We arrived at the first venue and immediately saw Jeff and Dave setting up the amps (provided by Ran) along with Pablo (Tikiyaki Orchestra) who provided the drums for the shows. Our evening show was at the Barkley in South Pasadena with the Kaiser’s of Kalifornia (members of Los Kahunas, Huntington Cads & the Finks), and Tremolo Beer Gut (TBG). Both bands on the bill were great, and played amazing sets. It was the Kaiser’s first show after only one rehearsal. Chris Barfield and El Papu are a couple of fabulous players, and TBG are intense and atmospheric in the best way possible. USK played between both bands using borrowed gear (thanks to Big Tiki Dude). It was the first time I have played a Jazzmaster, the raffle guitar, and it had flat wound strings too (yikes, I play round wound). It took me a bit of time to get comfortable with guitar, but we did find our groove. The audience was enthusiastic and the club had a good crowd for a Thursday night. Fri, Aug 3 Hung around in Long Beach, and went in the Pacific Ocean. Discovered there are more vintage clothing shops that sell Hawaiian shirts than I could ever imagine. Our show was at the Purple Orchid (Tiki Bar) in El Segundo. This was the first time I was ever in a real live Tiki bar, and was not disappointed. The stage was very small, and the room was very packed with standing room only for the SG101 Convention pre-show. The night featured 4 bands: The Blackball Bandits (TBB), Frankie & the Poolboys (F), and TBG. It was such a pleasure to hear all the bands. TBB were high energy and featured an excellent sax player. They were a great mix of modern and classic surf sounds. F is such a tight band featuring my friend Ferenc on guitar. They played tunes from all their releases, with the title track from their new one, Spin the Bottle, becoming my new favourite song by them. Amber’s keyboarding really adds a great dimension to the band. TBG were once again on fire with their smoke machine, and red lighting. Race Horse from Hell has become my new live favourite. They really engage the audience. USK were the second band on, and I was ready with my new newly round wound strung Jazzmaster. The audience seemed to be with us from the first note, right to the end of our set. We even got called back to play some more so we played Link Wray’s Rawhide. Someone had mentioned that there is little to no dancing at California surf shows, but I’m here to tell you that is a lie. The whole night was so much fun. I had the chance to meet so many people in person that I only knew from FB and SG101. Everyone was so welcoming, and enthusiastic...plus people knew who Urban Surf Kings were! Jeff (BTD) is not only a great guy, but organized a couple of great shows for us before the convention. Saturday and Sunday ‘s reports coming soon. Rev —Canadian Surf |

Errands kept me from checking in at SG101 until mid-afternoon. It's the first place I look when I log on, then I check out Google News. I'm running down the headlines and, lo and behold, I found this. Check out the third item in the list. It's a great article and really made my day. — -Tim |

What a weekend! And here in NorCal we get to see Les Agamemnonz two more times on Thursday and Friday. Might catch up on sleep by next year's convention. Thanks to Jeff and everyone whose hard work makes this happen. So much love in the room, it must be the reverb. |
