So, I have set down the 6-string and picked up the bass. In between studying technique and practicing, who should I be listening to?

Ralph
The Storm Surfers

Be at one with the universe. If you can't do that, at least be at one with your guitar.

Jonpaul Balak in Ibsect Surfets and Tikiyaki orchestra and tikiyaki 5-0,
Don Para in the Torquays, Lada of the Bambi Molesters, and Kathrine of the Space Cossacks. Oh almost forgot. Sam Bole of Slacktone

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Lada is a big reason I started playing bass.

Thanks for the recommendations!

E. Scott Esbeck of early Los Straitjackets.

Cool. Thank you. I want to really listen to as many good players as I can.

Check out James Jamerson, John Paul Jones, Carol Kaye. Find isolated tracks. Consider changing your name so that your first and last initials match.

Listen to some live recordings of Zappa from 1984 and 1988. Scott Thunes' bass playing is SPECTACULAR.

Deal with reality, or reality will deal with you.

Does DNAdude count? Big Grin Love Carol Kaye and James Jamerson, though I have no desire to go the one finger route like Jamerson did!

Yo Bass players - what's your philosophy on muting?

Yes. Lots of foam in front of the bridge in my P.

I've also played with a pick so I can palm mute.

I play upright too and have learned from that to dislike ringing bass strings. Bloom and decay FTW.

Flatwounds and a foam mute for sure

It depends on the song. Definitely an asset when using a pick.

While I almost always play guitar on gigs, playing bass is one of my greatest pleasures. There’s a raw logic to the instrument that appeals equally to the artist in my soul and to my inner nerd. Smile There’s just such a satisfying logic to good bass playing that I always feel it a treat.
