Permalink Preamp suggestions

New Topic

I just bought a Peavey Classic 2 x 60w 6L6 tube power amp. The clean sound is really nice ( running preamp out from a Mesa ), and i can run it in stereo. I am looking for a simple tube preamp, with a nice clean sound. Most preamps has the emphasise on a modern over drive hard rock sound. Not a typical surf setup, but i just have to try.

I would prefer a 1 or 2 U rack mounted preamp that i can place above the Peavey, but I can use a pedal type of preamp to. Is the schematic a Fender DL reverb preamp?

Hi Bluez, you'll find a that most guitar tube preamp use a 12ax7 - which is the highest gain factor (100%) preamp tube. If I was in your situation I would get hold a a tube preamp and swap out the 12ax7 for something smoother and less aggressive like a 12ay7 (same tube that Fender used in V1 in their tweed amps - gain factor of around 40%). If that's too low gain you could try a 5751 (gain factor of 70%). The 12ay7 and 5751 seem to be the two valve swaps favored by guitarist to lower the gain of an amp.

Have a look at this link - it explains it all

That's about the only suggestion I have.

Good luck

Just get this. It's all you need as a pre or stand alone.

How about one of these? It's about 10 years old, but I've heard great things about it.

Here's a real 12AX7A tube preamp with built-in limiter for $40 (today Memorial Day sale price), the ART Tube MP:
https://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/art-tube-mp-studio-mic-preamp
(I don't know the guy who made the video of it).

I use one for miscellaneous purposes, including boosting signals into amplifiers when I'd like them louder, as from synthesizers and microphones. It works on guitars as well as mics.

Add a Zoom G1on or G1Xon pedal and you'll have a complete system.

Nocturne Atomic Brain or Mystery Train are both excellent pre-amps that allow you to dial in clean to pretty aggressive and all of the sweet spots in between. https://www.thenocturnebrain.com/ As an alternative, I have a Splash reverb pedal (Very cool sounds) but it also sports a VERY clean level boost that may fit your needs on a number of levels. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea7Bg-3e20Q. Good luck!

Cool

I think Alembic bass preamps were just AB763 preamps.

Cool. Makes sense.

Makes me wonder if anyone has tried putting a Music Man pre in a can and running that into a tube power section. I just fixed my friend's MM amp; they sound great and are built to withstand WWIII. (They are mostly SS pre into tube power in case that was not obvious).

Quilters have a fender type tone stack. I use my /quilter to pre amp and boost my reverb. Listen although it sounds like a typical camera phone.

Yes, at least for the F-2B but with increased cathode bypass capacitors (50μF, like a Brownface, instead of 25μf) for better bass response.

If you want to go down that route you could try building this.

Has anyone built one of these?

I bought an Ampeg SVPCL. It's an all tube preamp (4 tubes).

It has an Ampeg badge the illuminates green when it's warm and white when it's warming up. It has many tone variations, and has a nice clean and warm sound. It's made for bass and I am going to use it for that as well.

I had this one for awhile. Nice clean preamp.
