I write in praise of Surf Guitar 101, and by extension, surf musicians everywhere.

I belong to some other interest groups I won't mention. During just the past several months, what as a parent I view as tantrums have exploded on many of them. Any statement someone disagrees with is immediately met with vituperative invective. Battle lines get drawn, opposing sides are joined, and the war of insults commences. There's not much actual discussion - just barrages of ridicule bombs.

My participation here is sadly minimal of late. I completely underestimated the time I would need to live the life I led before the move. It remains a work in progress.

But this just happened. I can share it here, knowing it will be appreciated for what it is, and that I won't get flamed for being too far off-topic. It has to do with instrumental music, after all. Big Grin

So three cheers for Surf Guitar 101, for Brian who created it and keeps it running, everyone who helps him, and all our members. You are all why it's my favorite place on the Internet.

Cheers Cheers Cheers

I love the music but like others I come here because it's fun. And a bit of nostalgia as well because I do remember 1963 and buying Wipe Out as my first 45 rpm single.

This website is the most un up-tight website I have ever been a member of.
There has been a time or two way back when when somebody got excited about what another person said.
But it settled fast and peace insued.

Noel,
I've heard many wonderful stories about your talented father through our conversations but this article and tribute helped even more to illuminate his career and your perspective.
Thank you for sharing this.

Cheers,
Jeff

First of all, as to this site - SG101 is the first place I land on the net. I belong to other guitar oriented forums but don't find any of them as friendly and as relevant to what I read forums for as this one.

And as for Noel's article - what a cool thing it must have been to grow up in a household with exposure to music and musicians like he did. And like Noel, I personally didn't arrive at performing music until after my Dad had passed. If I have one regret regarding playing guitar it is that I didn't take it seriously while my parents were still alive. Neither my Mom or my Dad got to see me play on stage and I have no doubt that they would have been my biggest fans. (Maybe my only ones). Laughing Noel, while your music may be a different kind than your Dad's was, his spirit is in you.

This is a really wonderful forum. I joined a month or so ago after lurking for a while. It's the only forum I've ever been a member of. The focus is so specific and nerdy that no one comes here for anything other than to indulge that preoccupation. Anyone seeking less civil forms of anonymous web interaction can always wade back into the toxic cesspool that is Facebook.

I recall stumbling on this forum while looking for users of Quilter amps. My main surf music preoccupation, aside from my own guitar tone, was anticipating the new release from the Mermen (one of my all time favorite bands period, regardless of genera), already an active forum topic when I discovered Surfguitar101. Time spent exploring the forum resulted in rekindling my broader interest in surf guitar music. I was aware of other surf bands in a general kind of way but had no idea really great bands like The Madeira and The Tomorrowmen for example even existed.

That's my story. Thanks for widening my surf listening taste and for providing a great little space on the web.

PS My apologies to the guy in Colorado patiently seeking band mates. He may not have appreciated my weird earnest/absurd humor.

Nice story. Smile

SG101 inspires me. There were little signs throughout my decades of playing that a mainstream pop approach to guitar was not scratching the itch and that I was missing out on something. Surf music has become such a major part of my guitar playing, creativity, and I feel that I am back on track with setting and achieving musical goals.
I was born in '70 so all my growing up and formative years in guitar were during the off-years for surf/instro. It's only been in the past 5-6 years that this world opened up to me.
Without this community, though, this would not have happened in remotely the same way...or maybe at all.

I'd concur with this sentiment, well said.
When I decided to revisit this music that I heard in my youth and attempt to create my own I had no idea Surf Guitar 101 existed.
When I found this forum I was struck at the kindness and community that existed and amazed at the expertise and advice.
I was fairly anti internet guitar forum minded at that point but this place was an oasis.
It's provided me with many wonderful, quality, real life friendships.
This community has sustained my pursuit when many of times I've come close to calling it quits.
I am thankful.

Cheers,
Jeff

I will join this praise if you dont mind, Noel) this community is friendly and informative all the way you may wish. Always find the answers, good advice or just some interesting stuff to read, watch or listen.

Also some of you may remember that in my dark hours I asked for support and advice here and recieved unbelievably a lot of it, got new friends and a lot of inspiration.

Thanks for all the comments, everyone! Welcome to sg101 ElectricLimnology. Glad you're here. And Samurai, I don't mind at all. I welcome more such comments if anyone wants to.

Maybe I haven't taken advantage of it myself (my fault), but what impresses me about this community is that it is a real community of people whom you can meet at events and get to know. It's not all just usernames and avatars posting anonymously. Even I who haven't attended anything can feel it from the many videos posted. Though I don't know any of you, I feel like I do.

Also, I have always loved how so many of my favorite people from my favorite surf bands post here and are so down to earth. Brian, you have done a great job creating a place and fostering a friendly atmosphere here. Thanks!

Bump!

Yes and yes, this site is truly a gem, thank you Brian and all the rest of the community. It’s a dream. There are plenty of guitar forums and gear forums but this site has everything I’ll ever need. Pretty much everything I care about musically involves the surf tone.

The diy people here really know their stuff and are so delightfully free with their knowledge. (I forsee a Surfy Bear in my distant future!)

I found this haven searching for which Jaguar to get. This was only after discovering that that guitar is The Guitar to provide the tone I’d been searching for. (Phantom Surfers and Trashwomen!) I am a pretty lazy person and it’s taken over 20 years to get a surf band together, but putting out vinyl of my version of surf is basically the only thing on my bucket list.

The only other forum I belong to is one I joined in 2008 that’s all about production sound recording, which is what I do for work. That place has giants in the field (the dude who mixed Terminator posts there for example), as well as younguns who’ve just discovered the field. SG101 is like that place, most people use there real names, and giants in the field provide wizened feedback to surf newbies.

This kind of site is in the .01% of Best of the Internet, easily.

Carrying the torch for surf along with you all, thanks!

Meh. SG101 is alright.
