A jolly British fellow I work with got his 9 year old daughter an ukulele and she took to it. Started bringing it around and composing little songs. They went to a family friend's house, a very rich guy. A very rich guy who has an extensive vintage guitar collection, far too many to count. She performed a little ukulele song for him and he was so charmed he walked away. Then he came back with an immaculate, seemingly unplayed 1958 Jazzmaster and GAVE IT TO HER. It's value is around $18,000 - $20,000. When my pal discovered that he tried to give it back, plus she can't really reach the low frets. Nope, he wanted her to have it and refused to take it back.
I've contrived all sorts of plans to get him to "replace" it, for example have my friend accidentally sit on it and break it, or it fell out the second floor window, can you please replace it?
It's gorgeous natural wood, I've only seen photos but it looks like something worth spending $18,000 if you got the cake.
Maybe I could find an AVRI in the same finish and swap them out when no one is looking? I'd have to break into his house for that.
Of course I would never steal from anyone especially a friend but if that had been a jaguar...

Dan,
Yes, isn’t it just human nature that the little devil
shows up on our shoulder from time to time.
Good on ya for resisting the urge.
One thing you might want to encourage your friend
to do is look at getting that guitar insured.
It might be covered under their homeowners
insurance, but best to check and make sure.
Also might be good to encourage them not to
talk too much about the value for something
that is both valuable and easily transportable.

Good ideas! I just texted him. For crying out loud she’ll be too little to play that thing for years! Maybe I could be the custodian...

Lucky little lady! You mention natural wood, has it been refinished?

Yeah, that's a gift to take super seriously. Hopefully her dad will keep it stowed someplace safe (and insured) until her time comes.

Buy a half-size guitar with nylon strings and give it to the man as a present for his daughter, saying should fit her hands and fingers better and with the nylon strings and lighter weight it will encourage her to play it. If he doesn't know that you have a strong interest in guitars mention it. Then sit back and hope he offers you the JM.
Oh, and get the guitar in her favorite color.

I don’t think it’s been refinished. He found an internet photo and said it looked just like it, which was a JM with a light brown ish color that you could see the grain through.
Yes he already knows I would take it off his hands, but it’s not going anywhere. That is a great idea about a nylon string gift! I’ve only met the daughter and wifey a couple times so it might be weird. Maybe I should hang out in front of their house and play a nylon string at all hours? Then when they offer me water I can get to know them better. Mua-hahahaaah sounds like a plan!
