Here's Joe: Joe wrote the song for the Tornados track. In fact there was a plagiarism suit against him from a French composer. Sort of what happened to Morris Albert with "Feelings." Meek did not play instruments and had others help him transcribe his melodies to be recorded. There was a movie of Joe Meek's life. Last edited: Apr 03, 2018 06:43:55 |

I've seen the movie. Not sure how accurate it is, but it's interesting to see all the vintage gear they used to make the movie. This book is a very interesting read. Last edited: Apr 03, 2018 07:49:45 |

I know what you mean about "accuracy." Here's a Tornados video showing some gear and no Clavioline. Last edited: Apr 03, 2018 08:09:19 |

An interesting mix. I love the microphone leakage. Too much isolation kind of takes away from the spirit of a recording. |

There's a way to get around the isolation if desired. Play all the tracks through a studio monitor and mic that as a room mic track, add that track to the mix. You may have to nudge the tracks a few milliseconds against each other to line them up but in a DAW, no problemo. |

That sounds like a great idea! I have a home recording of Telstar that sounds kind of sterile to my ears. Maybe that will fix it. |

The possibilities are endless. Most of the records we listen to were made by people who took a leap of faith and just went for something they heard in their heads. You can put the mic outside the room you have your monitors, or put the monitors in the bathroom or a stairwell. Use heavy EQ and compression on your monitor track to make it sound bigger. Experiment with the track fader when bringing your monitor track into the rest of the mix. A little can go a long way. For those wanting something that is reminiscent of the old organs, Yamaha makes the Reface YC. It's a mini keyboard so portability is not an issue. Here are Reface versions of organ, synths and pianos. |

WOW, it's no surprise that he'd have to make a demo of the song for others to transcribe it. He was tone deaf. |

All the way from Sweden (and Japan)the mighty Teenage Engineering OP-1. I have bought and sold a few synths in recent years and this little baby tops them all. Chassis milled from solid aluminum it has several mono synth engines, drum machine, 4 track "tape" recorder and 2 modes of sampling. What dumfounds me about most synths is the many buttons and knobs and what they are supposed to do, seriously you could spend half a lifetime trying to figure out synthesis. By contrast the OP-1 has quite a few animated cartoon editing screens so for instance if I was to add modulation and direct it towards the ADSR envelope I can immediately see the animated effect of modulation on the envelope screen. It's not a cheap device, it has it's restrictions but there's nearly always a workaround and it soon becomes an addictive puzzle. It's great for making crazy tunes, rather like a Fairlight CMI in many ways I can sample any sound and play it across the keyboard. Pure genius. |

That Clavioline is quite an instrument. Has anyone checked out the new KORG/VOX Continental Organ? —All opinions expressed by this poster are well thought out and based on actual experience and/or scientific experimentation, except for those which are knee-jerk reactions or good sounding fantasies. |
