Yes! It's the middle of the night, I'm up watching amp theory videos, and you post this. I can't wait to see how this goes.

I've been trying to figure out if the unused 1/2 12AX7 could be pressed into service as a drive boost for the normal channel. Coupled with a NFB reduction, perhaps?

I can vouch for the eBay seller zachmdhunter. He made a run of Brownface Bandmaster chassis' that I bought one of. He still has some listed.

So, your plan is to buy one of those solid state combos, gut it and make a Brownface Showman combo?

I was once given a red knob Deluxe '85 combo made from particle board - I'll spare you the sad story about that one.

I can recommend eBayUK seller doublenickles_55 based in the Cotswolds, his hand crafted pine cases are excellent. Nice guy I've spoken to him a couple times.

I was thinking a Mojotone cabinet. I think they're ply? Unfortunately doublenickles_55 is no longer on eBay. Thanks for the recommendation, though!

I think he's still with eBay just not selling anything at the moment. I eBay follow him and on occasion shoot him a message, he always responds cheerfully whether he's selling or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the originals were military surplus stock? Mercury Magnets the closest to those?
And Hammond Electronics UK is in Basingstoke.

Thanks! This is a great resource. I will digest the entirety of it. On the subject of transformers, I'm going to need to figure out if an extra gain stage in a Showman circuit will require a different spec.

Yes to your first question but I was thinking it would utilize the unused second half of one of the existing tubes (4th one in from the right on both versions.) My hope is that the extra gain, coupled with NFB reduction or disabling, would result in something like the "burn" channel on the Super Sonic amps. Of course, that's merely an uninformed musing and I don't know if it's actually feasible.

UPDATE: Apparently it is feasible. Here's something gleaned from another forum:

"Once you go brown, everything else will let you down!

Speed turned me on to to the brownface circuit and it ROCKS. If you've got to have a Fender type trem, then this is the one to do. Yup, do the -A version. You don't have to waste the half stage either. On my recent project I used it as a post trem stage (actually the driver, but it's SE so I didn't need a phase splitter.) If you have a lot of preamp distortion before the tremolo it can have a kind of phaser effect, or like Speedracer said sort of Leslie-like. If you drive it really hard it seems to just get swamped out and go away. This is really nice for controlling dynamics and gain from the guitar. Back off the volume a bit and you get lush swirly tremolo. Crank it up and you've got a great lead tone with a touch of "phasing".

My only wish with this circuit is that it could go slower. I've increased the values of the oscillator caps , and that helped a bit, but it has a tendency to just go away and stop oscillating if turned down too slow.

The 3 meg RA pots are available from Ampwares, Hoffman, Clark Parts, and Angela, but good luck finding the 10meg RA. I found one at a surplus electronics store. It was actually s-taper which I didn't really like so I built my own "stepped" pot with a single pole twelve position rotary switch. "

But I do understand that building a modified version as my first amp project ever is probably more ambitious than I should be. If I do, though, I'll have eyes more capable than mine all over it and affirming the design before I ever start shopping for parts.

So it looks like you're building the 6G14 rather than the 6G14-A version, yes? What's the difference between the two, sound wise?
