Permalink Surf/Instro Bassist Wins Grammy!

New Topic

Well, sort of.
As a few of you are aware of, our bassist Alex McCollough's day job is as a Mastering Engineer.
He's been at it for many years but a few years back he left a prominent mastering facility to start his own, private business.
He's since mastered many records in most genres.

Last night Rhonda Vincent won the Grammy for best bluegrass record and Alex mastered the record, which I think is really cool.
He won't get a trophy/statue but he will get a certificate from the Grammy association which is how they've been doing it for a few years now for folks involved in a "Best" win in a genre.

I have a few friends who have won Grammys and even more that have been involved with award winning records but never a bandmate, so I just wanted to share this and congratulate him.

Now how do we actually get Surf on the list of nominees? LOL

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks for sharing, Jeff. Congrats to Alex!

In other Grammy/Surf related news, the Atlanta band Mastodon won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. Mastodon's lead guitarist, Brent Hinds, is also lead guitarist/singer for the surfabilly band Fiend Without a Face. Fiend played a Southern Surf Stomp a couple of years back and I saw Brent attending this year's Southern Surf StompFest.

Speaking of which, hey Jeff, when are you going to bring Crazy Aces to play a StompFest? I would love that.

Please pass on my congratulations to Alex!

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Wow, most excellent!!!

Many congratulations to Alex.

Great news, Jeff!

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

THAT is truly cool. That must be a pretty good feeling. I can imagine especially with bluegrass the work that must be involved, and familiarity with the style & musicians' goals, to catch the nuances of everything.

Very neat. Thumbs Up

If you see him please tell him we said congratulations.

WE would love that too, Chad has kindly asked us, and have tried the last few years but schedules didn't permit. We would so much love to get back to our friends in Atlanta.

Jeff I am confident that Alex wouldn't have accomplished this without your guidance and encouragement, so you deserve congratulations, too.

Thank you for the kind words but as much as I support Alex in all of his endeavors I have nothing at all to do with his mastering talents and business.
His audio abilities and "ears" will always be far beyond my amateur tinkering.

Jeff

Congratulations to Alex. Mastering just baffles me, and I am in awe of anyone who can do it. Do you have a link to his mastering business?

Rev,
I'm with you there.
Watching him work is amazing.

In additional news it looks like he now may actually receive the Grammy trophy/statue.
Since this win on sunday he's already had requests to do records for other award winning mastering engineers that are too busy.

Cheers,
Jeff
