Permalink Justice for Brian Wilson

It's nice to pick up the morning paper and see an article like this- front page too!

Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson returns to alma mater at Hawthorne High School for some justice

But:
“Surfin’ USA” was released on an album of the same name in 1963 and spent 25 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, peaking at third place. Chuck Berry received writing credit and publishing royalties for the hit because it was based on his 1958 hit “Sweet Little Sixteen.”

Maybe they should have adjusted the grade to “C”.

That article is wrong. The song he wrote, and received the F on, is Surfin'. It was the first song The Beach Boys recorded. Surfing USA was a few years later, and had no resemblance to Surfin' at all. I can't believe they got the story wrong.

I noticed they got it right in the photo caption -

Given the time period, I can see why his rather stodgy and musically short sighted teacher gave him an "F". Rock and roll was barely 10 years old. The "old guard" such as his teacher looked down on it with the usual disdain of "it's just three simple chords" or some such condescension. Well meaning, at best, but still really stupid advice. They probably forgot that their ancient parents looked down on their swing jazz and big bands.
So it goes. There are times I thank my inner instincts in ignoring and subverting my youthful overseers by pursuing what I damn well felt like pursuing.

Personally, I would have kept the "F". It would be like saying "'F'-bomb You" to the idiot teacher's memory.

Does nobody else find it crazy that this is a high school with a music class that not only had its students write original compositions, but graded them? Music theory was an elective for me, only 5 other people in the class, and we were basically just writing chord progressions. Same in college.

I always figured the assignment was to write a song in a certain style, or using specific musical ideas that simply weren't met by Brian and his song. He probably deserved the F. I don't know that he ever complained about it.

Bom bom dip da dip.

In the "Beach Boys:America's Band" documentary, they have a short clip with the teacher, who says that he should have given him an A.

Imagine if he had just given up figuring he had no talent for music?

Brian has credited this for part of the inspiration for Surfin', but I don't particularly hear it, except that I can fit in the lyric, "Surfin' is the only life the only way for me", but that could fit a lot of tunes.

I still think the school should stick by its instructors judgement, and balance the honor accorded both. I’m guessing he’s deceased? Maybe a “B” for that song then.
