Permalink Princeton Amp Problems - Please Help!

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 Next

Hey guys, here is my 1976/7 Fender Princeton amp. I actually just sold my Twin Reverb simply due to it's weight. Once I bought this amp, I didn't even use the Twin anymore. This Princeton is really loud and really clean, and most importantly it's relatively light weight.

I hope you guys like what I have done with it, even though it's not cosmetically period correct. If anyone can tell me the correct year of the amp, please let me know. Thank you guys for all of your help and advice!

You have to fix your Fender logo placement! It is two rectangles over, three rectangles down.

I realize that, but I am lucky it fit at all on this grille. I tried to put it in the proper place and the bottom hole(s) were over the speaker opening. In other words, I would not be able to screw at least one of the bottom holes in. I didn't want to have a hole without a screw in it. Does that make sense?

My beloved '73 has looked like this for about the last 12 years so I guess you could say I approve.
Yours looks great!

Cheers,
Jeff

Yeah, makes sense. You can saw part of the screw off and glue it in place. It missing a screw would look better than its current placement. Fender logos in the wrong place, to me, scream of unoriginality. While that might not be your goal here, you did put a Fender logo on so having it in the right place will complete that picture.

Nice. Very nice.
Question: Who made the faceplate?
I have a late 70s Pro Reverb, and I've thought of doing something similar. Whoever made that faceplate obviously does nice work.

(Safe to say, mine would be the Fender 'Pro Reverbenator' model.)

Nice! (Where did you get the flat logo? I need one.)

That's the best I could do, Jake! Can you see the holes that I previously drilled in the wood? I tried to cover them up the best I could. How do the empty holes in the emblem look? I am just going to leave it like it is.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. Crazy, your amp is sweet! Anyway, Mojotone did the faceplate for me. I bought the flat logo online at Darren Riley's. That guy has everything. Can't wait to take this baby out to show it off the next time I play!

I picked one up off of amazon last year for my VVRI. Just do a search for Fender flat amplifier logo. I think it was $10 or $11.

Fantastic! For whatever reason I didn't think Fender made those available separately. Just put it on my Wish List. Thanks!

Ah, another source! Thanks, Jake! Great news! I have a '68 (or so) 2x12 Bassman cab I've had recovered in rough blonde tolex with oxblood grille years ago - it's what I use with my '62 Bandmaster. But back then I couldn't get one of these logos for a reasonable price so I ended up just using the original (raised) logo on the cab. It's always bothered me, though. Time to fix that! Thanks!

Fender had discontinued and sued anybody that made repro amp logos. I remember stocking up on them several years back when the 'Verb was restoring and/or creating and/or retolexing amps and one of the guys was starting a guitar shop business. Paying $50-80 wasn't out of the realm of possibility back then.

VERY nice! Thumbs Up
Those non-reverb Princetons can get quite loud without crashing out; they just get that nice 'oomph' on the output side. And, on these anyway, if it's giving you what you want don't muck with the rectifier (although I've seen one of these that had the earlier GZ34 in it that sounded gorgeous).

Could someone please tell me if the death cap has been removed from this amp? Ever since I learned about these things, I have been worried I will get electrocuted. Thanks in advance for your help.

Love it. I'm a big fan of blond tolex.

Looks great...I don't think that era Princeton had a death cap and the schematic doesn't show one either.

Thank you, Surfadelphia. Ben, I appreciate you taking a look and am glad to hear that this amp probably doesn't have a death cap. Sigh
