Misirlu is a Turkish song (Tur., ‘Egyptian (girl)’)It was sung by Anatolian Greek immigrants who lived in Piraeos by Athens after the Population Exchange as part of the Rembetic repertoire. That style of music enjoyed popularity stateside after the success of films like ‘Never on a Sunday’. Mikis Theodorakis was the composer of the title tune I think.
Since Rembetika was already an ensemble style in the 1920s with many of the forms adopted by bands later, I would argue that it has more influence on the inception of surf than does the more esoteric Flamenco.
