Permalink Whoa! What was that?

I was just sitting there playing my tele, my finger fretting G# on the the fat E string way up there on the dusty part of the board, when it happened. The incessant barking of my dog from out back in the yard drove me to smack that note and slide it down to the nut and hit the open E, before I leapt from the chair to shoot the dog. Whoa,_ that_ sounded cool! So forgeting the dog, I did it again. And again. What is that? Oh , wait , that's that song from Pulp Fiction... Dick Dale... Miserlou! I started picking it out as best I remembered. Hey this is cool! Wait, I need a wiggle stick for this. I jumped up and got my LP Special with P90s and a Bigsby, plugged it in and cranked the reverb. What a blast!

That was 3 weeks ago and now all I do is play surfing, spying, sci-fi-ing, reverb dripping instros.

So now I'm on this site, taking a crash course in surf, while I listen to Devlar Surf Sessions.

Any suggestions about equipment, bands, music resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Now, if I could just decide between a Jag and a Jazzmaster...

Welcome Woody-

This is a good place to learn about reverb drippin' instrumentals. Instrumental guitar music has been a pursuit of mine for myself for 22 years. There are so many different sub-genres of this music, and you mentioned a few, that may scratch your itch.

I suggest as a start to learn more about these genres, to go to www.reverbcentral. This will get you directed to alot of music. You may enjoy checking into Satan's Pilgrims, Los Straight Jackets, The Shadows, and The Ventures (to name a few of my favs).

In regards to equipment; an outboard reverb tank will be a better investment than a Jaguar or Jazzmaster. The reverb tank will get your Tele and Lester to sound pretty close to the music you want to emulate. Just plug into a tube amp, turn up the dwell, then play it loud and proud.

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone make an outboard reverb tank other than Fender?

Read my primer on surf guitar gear, "Surf Guitar 101." It will give you the lowdown on gear basics. Go to the "Top 10" list on the side bar, it heads the top three or so categories.

Cool you are gettin' your surf on! (P.S. Lots of people here like Jags; I prefer Jazzmasters or Strats).

Gavin

Thanks, Gavin. Great read. What the hell's a Gremmie???

Gandy Dancer

A "gremmie" "grem" "grommet" or "grom" is surf lingo for a newbie. Someone lacking know-how, but not enthusiasm. It has a positive vibe.

Cool. Thanks.
