Pat Dinizio, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of he Smithereens passed away yesterday. No details yet aside from he was just 62 years old.

What a horrid year 2017 has been for losing some truly great musicians.

The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005)
The Hula Hounds (1996-current)
The X-Rays (1997-2004)
The Surge! (2004, 2011-2012)
Various non-surf bands that actually made money
(1978-1990)

Oh man, I was actually JUST listening to Blood and Roses for the first time in forever yesterday and thinking what a good song it was. I'd always kind of ignored it, which I should't have. 2017 has indeed been a steaming pile.

That stinks. I love The Smithereens, and Pat’s solo stuff as well. They made a great Christmas album, and their Beatles tributes were fun too. Not to mention the slew of great albums and super catchy songs they did early on. They never got the credit I thought they were due.

Any time someone asks me what kind of band I would like to be in if I didn’t play surf, I say a good rock and roll band, like The Smithereens.

I met Pat a few years back in Asbury Park, NJ at some club where he did an acoustic set. He was experiencing weight problems as a side effect from some medication he had to take. A mutual acquaintance of ours saw him at an outdoor festival last summer. Pat had to be helped on stage but gave a great performance. He just wasn't looking too good according to my friend.

If you look at his website, you may see pictures of a black custom '63 Ventures model Mosrite built for him by Semie Moseley. He gave it up to a vintage guitar dealer in the mid 90s due to some marital problems as I was told. I now own that custom black '63 Mosrite. It has his and Moseley's signatures on it. Think I'd play "Blood and Roses" on it tonight for old Pat.
I liked his music and outlook on life..
RIP Pat

That really sucks,
RIP Pat,

Footnote, Smithereens covered a few surf songs as B-sides

A couple of days ago, my beautiful bride and I spontaneously broke into a rendition of "Behind the Wall of Sleep." We were shocked this morning to read of Pat's passing.

The Reverbivores - we're local favorites!

Just listened to them a few days ago. I always loved their sound and agree that they didn't get the recognition they deserved. RIP
