please forgive my ignorance. I have never listened to these guys before and got a sample recently. I was really blown away. Any information on these guys would be appreciated, and of course where to buy there CD's. These 4 mp3's won't hold my ipod over too long.
I have not posted in some time, I hope everyone is enjoying there summer as much as me.
Regards,

Buy "Locked & Loaded". It is one of my favs. You will not be disappointed. Lead by the late, great Rip Thrillby, The Penetrators have produced amazing original surf tunes.

did they continue on after Rip's passing? How many albums were made with Rip? Such a sad story, I guess everyone genre of rock music has to have a shinning star taken way too soon to make you wonder.

Twangler is from the penetrators. Maybe he will chime in with any current happenings with the Penetrators.

The Penetrators released 2 albums: Kings of the High Speed Weekend, and Locked and Loaded. They also released a ton of 7" stuff and appeared on many comps, including the masterful "For a Few Guitars More" tribute to Morricione.
They are still playing today and appeared just last weekend at the Clarkston GA Surf Fest.
Stix, the drummer, also plays in The Surge!
You can find a ton of information, including their whole mythos they built up for themselves at their website. Search our links database for their website URL.

Somewhat bemused, I notice that the Penetrators have a number of MySpace extrusions:
http://www.myspace.com/southernsurfsyndicate
http://www.myspace.com/penetratorssurf
One of them might be a cover identity ...
No, I've figured it out, the second one above is Stechkin. It refers to Agent 013 in the image.
And, then there's the shadowy safe house at:
http://www.myspace.com/sourthernsurfsyndicate (note very subtle spelling change)
This one is particularly cool, because the cuts are just the bass lines of the songs.
Also maybe relevant here would be:
http://www.myspace.com/thesurgeinstro (The Surge)
Nip out to Denver for July 13th and you can catch Katcher at the Skylark Lounge on Broadway with Chris Fesker, hosted by the Beloved Invaders.

The mighty Penetrators are indeed alive and well. They are performing as a three piece and they sound great! Check out Spanky's Surf Fest review. I have current pictures from Surf Fest, but have not cropped and polished them for posting. Greg Nichol has posted some already with his review of the afternoon's actvites. More to come......ed

Now you're talking about my favorite subject (grin)
Seriously, thanks for the interest. Just to kind of bullet point a few of the questions and inquiries:
The present: Yes we still play, now as a 3 piece, although not nearly as much as in the oldin' days. Between the 3 of us we spawned 7 kids in the last 6 years which puts a bit of a crimp in the rock and roll lifestyle. Currently we have plans for 3 major projects (possibly 4) one of which could conceivably be released this year if all goes well. We'll see.
My learning how to play lead after being a very content rhythm guitar player for so long posed some challenges in getting up to speed as well (I literally had no idea how to play lead on anything 4 years ago - covers or originals), but I'm feeling pretty confident these days. Although, we miss Rip in the song writing process which has always been very collaborative, Trace dreamed up gems like Last of the V-8 Interceptors, 50 bucks a midget, and Night of the Drunken Cheerleaders to name a few, and I believe we have some new songs about 85% done just as good or better.
Past recordings: "Kings of the Highspeed Weekend" is officially sold out but 2 of the cuts are available on i tunes via the Spinout records "Rock don't Run 2" comp we were on. The songs are "Night of the Drunken Cheerleaders" and "Melodies Dilemma." The "Locked and Loaded" CD is still available on our web site:
http://www.penetrators.com/loot.html
Along with other cool t-shirts, coffee mugs etc. We have less than 100 copies of L&L left so that's soon to go on sold out status as well. Several other distributors should have some copies and you can download it from i tunes in it's entirety. I recommend picking up the hard copy. Rip did some unbelievable graphics for that.
The web: In addition to the numerous myspace sites detailed earlier, there is also our web site which has only been updated to announce Rip's stage exit in the last few years. I hope to rectify that soon as well.
www.penetrators.com
You tube sites:
http://www.youtube.com/penetrators
Right now, this features "50 Bucks a Midget" from a show back in Feb, a video of us covering the Space Cossack's "Red Sunrise" that combines our last actual gig with Rip with our last bar gig. And there is a very low rez copy of our 'real' video for "Redlined." I'd suggest going here to see (and hear) a better version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFZY_EE4oaE
I reckon that about brings things up to speed. One of these days we hope to have some more product out and travel to new spaces in this great country to spread the reverb. We promised we'd play as long as we have fun so I'm guessing we have 30 or 40 years left in us.
Hopefully that brings you up to speed in some respects. Glad you ran across what we have to offer and like what you've heard so far. Spread the word.
Happy Reverbs!

From one rhythm guitarist to another, I do understand the challenges of learning to play lead all too well. My hats off to you for hanging in there and doing such a fantastic job!! I truly admire you guys for hanging tough together when a lesser group might have folded under similar circumstances. Even for an old surf player like me, its great to have symbols of excellence in this genre... even if they are young wippersnappers (with kids)!!
Please give my best to your Mom and Dad too. Two of the finest folks I've ever met.

Twangler,
Thanks for that discography. To make a long story short I had a shitload of mp3's and cds on digital format that friends, blogs, and message boards recommended. I build up tons of stuff I had yet had a chance to preview. I was in my car driving going through this monster play list. One song really stuck out. I was hooked; when I got home I listened to Melodies Dilemma like 10 times while blissfully getting drunk. The next day I listened to the other tracks which were great. Keep on rocking bro. I am definatly going to buy whatever I can get my hands on, except maybe the coffee mug

Since we're kind of on topic, Rip would have been 41 today, 7/14/07. I have no Scotch with me now, but the good news is there's 22 hours left in the day so I should be able to remedy that.
Here's to ya Rip!

I'll second that! Ill play some locked and loaded tonight and drink to Rip.
as a nice way to remember him, today is a great day to search the web a bit for something Rip wrote or put together. Ãt always cracks me up. He may have lived way to short, but in the time he was given he expressed more talent than most people in a life three times as long.

Hey Spanky, I'm in Colorado on vacation. It's funny, before I signed on this morning, I was sitting here in Ft Collins at my kid's house on the back porch and got the urge to knock out "Redlined." Coincidence? I don't think so. Happy birthday Rip Thrilby. Thanks so much for the inspiration...........

Rip was a force to be reckoned with. Guitarist, musician, artist, writer, hipster, gentleman... All packed up in a really nice guy.
Funny. Got many a laugh from his Shallow End commentaries.
He lives on in his inspiration.
Cheers to Rip and the Penetrators!

Just took a swig out of my bottle of scotch in Rip's memory, while tossing all my Penetrators stuff on an iTunes party shuffle. Now I've got about an hour and a half or two hours to kick back and enjoy their tunes while sipping on a little more scotch...

I must have seen about 20 Penetrators shows during the Rip Thrillby era (including the three Rip generously arranged for my backyard in Athens). Rip never failed to make me feel like part of the family (er, Syndicate). And he never failed to double-pick like a monster. Just the other day I was thinking about something Rip used to say about his songwriting: "Sometimes you just have to embrace the cliche." He was a bon vivant's bon vivant.
