FWIW, I was using an SS22 (essentially a Deluxe Reverb with some extra options) playing rockabilly and with three different drummers over three years and I usually had my amp around 10-11 o'clock. I did play with one drummer who was fairly psychotic and had to really crank it, but that was truly exceptional.

I use my Deluxe Reverbs with the volume set to 4 and the master volume on my Gretsch set to 75% of max. If it's too loud the audience can move back if it's too quiet they can move forward. Smile

Synchro...love that comment about getting the audience to move back or forward. I’ll use that next time we have a bar gig. Makes a change from me shouting ‘you’re not my dad’ to the barman when he complains

That only works if the barman isn't actually your father. Smile If you get that one wrong he'll jump over the bar and come after you with his belt. Smile

I had this same issue with the Supersonic 22. I put a Weber Californian in mine, but when I got close to the max output on 7 or 8, it just started crapping out in the worst way. I think when you get used to that volume edge and power with playing guitar that when you get overpowered it just feels and sounds like crap. I wonder though, if it is loud enough for you, perhaps you should try an extension cab to "reinforce" the sound? For me I can't play anything under 40 watts, even though I play it on 3. But with instrumental music I just find you have to really have some balls in your amp, though some like Chad from the Mystery Men would disagree and he sounds fantastic through his 20 watt silver face deluxe. So maybe it's just preference? Try a louder amp! Ivan Pongracic and John Blair both play 100 Watt Dual Showmans! OUCH!
