Debating on one of the two...Fender Classic Player or the Squier J Mascis..leaning towards the J Mascis.
Any opinions will be readily accepted...

Yeah, don't do the Classic Player. Nicer guitar, but not worth the extra money it would cost.
If you were thinking of buying a new Classic Player, you should be able to find a used 60s Lacquer for that price. Those guitars are great value and buying one used is a great investment.

I agree with Jake. I've had both (now have the Mascis). I unloaded the CP at the time as I also had a DiPinto Galaxie and needed to fund the purchase of a Gretsch Pro Jet (neither of which I have any more...sigh). Anyway, I don't see a whole lot of difference between the two and was pleasantly surprised that I could get a nice-sounding JM without having to invest the extra dough in getting another CP. Plus, I like the color better. (There was a time when all of my guitars were sunburst and now none of them are.)

Concur with Jake; the Classic 60's Lacquer series are a quantum leap from both of the other candidates.

If you prefer red over the cream color of the Mascis, check out the Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster w/ Trem. The spec's are the same, including the wider nut width, stain finished neck, etc except it comes in Candy Apple Red.
