Has anyone successfully made a "cold" sounding surf song?

I'm just really curious. I know the whole point and image of surf is the summer time, the beaches, Southern California, and obviously surfing, but is it possible to make surf sound "cold" and has anyone ever done it? (Cold as in temperature.) Also, in my defence for this curiosity... There are people that surf in freezing cold water. Just Google "Arctic Surfing" and it should be the first video. |

Verbism, you've asked a great question. So, what does cold sound like? About 30 years ago, on his 'Surfing With The Alien disc, Joe Satriani wrote a song called 'Ice 9'. He said his idea of a cold sound was a super clean, bright chorused rhythm guitar going, 'ching ching'. Back in the 90s, The Aqua Velvets did an album called 'Guitar Noir', in which Miles Corbin substituted Reverb for Tremolo. It yielded a dark moody sound. (It's one of my favorite Surf albums.) Does heavily Tremolo'd guitar = cold? That's for you to decide. A few years ago, I wrote a song called 'Graveyard of the Pacfic' (A part of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Pacfic North West.) To evoke the image of that area, I used Reverb, Delay and Suspended chords, in order to make it a bit more haunting. So, that cold sound is out there, your imagination and your ears just have to decide what it is. —-Cheers, Clark- -Less Paul, more Reverb- |

I agree that The Lonely Pilgrim has a great, cold feel...reminds me of a walk on the Oregon coast. Here's an old Verbtones tune Kyle put together. We never played it live, but it always had this cold, haunting feel to me. —Steve |

I've tried to develop the "Snowboard Sound" seeing that I'm in land locked, mountainous Utah, but haven't been successful. Nothing is coming to mind. —Either you surf, or you fight. |
