I just heard on CBS News that Tom Petty passed away today. He suffered a massive heart attack yesterday and was found uncinscious in his Malibu home.

Yes, just heard this as well.
Most of the news agencies are now reporting it so it looks like the sad news is true.
Huge influence and life soundtrack.
Thank you Tom.

Tom has now passed.
Tom Petty is the single most important figure in my musical growth. He was the best ever at what he did. He was a showman of unprecedented proportions. He never played the game, or rather he played the game and beat the game. That is, he fought for artists rights, he fought for the musical listener, he left the game of music a better place. He was a songwriter of great skill. And he was the bandleader of one of the finest bands of our time.
My first concert was Tom Petty. Tom Petty records made up a large portion of my early record collection. The Last DJ, his 2002 album, was one of the most anticipated albums I've ever waited for. His output was great up through 2002 with some of his best albums being later in his career(1994-2002).
A very sad moment. I haven't really lost a big musical hero since George Harrison in 2001 which was almost a little too early being almost half my life ago.

Well said Jake.
I grew up in a music loving household. Petty's was the first music that really engaged me.
Gainesville's favorite son. Thanks for the music, truly a sad day.

Been tracking this & hoping for different outcome but hope is seldom the determinant. Jake & Jeff have summarized my feelings above. See you at the final rally point, Tom. You did it right. "Pack Up the Plantation" is going on the turntable for a bit now.
Damn.

Tom Petty was one of the reasons I own a 12-string guitar (George Harrison, John Lennon and Roger McGuinn being other reasons). R.I.P. Tom Petty

I can't think of a Tom Petty song that I didn't like. He was and will be a legend for the period of rock and roll that he was part of. And, not that it matters but for the record, I'm fairly sure that it is Mike Campbell playing Goldfinger although without video it's hard to say for sure. Mike Campbell was a huge part of what made The Heartbreakers such a great band.

I'm really bummed but at the same time alarmed as it seems that all the really important musicians are all older and will be gone soon. Music has changed so very much and I'm afraid the creativity of days passed will never again be a reality. There will never be another album quite like "Damn the Torpedoes." Don't get me wrong as I do think there are good artists out there, but nothing like the past masters who had major impacts on music. Maybe I'm just getting old, but... Maybe I'm just sad, too.

A long time ago in a galaxy far away I was temporarily assigned from the Pentagon to one of the Cuban relocations centers doing commo & handling the spooks' debriefs. The MP's guarding the area would play serious adult rock (aimed inside the wire) most of the day and "Refugee" was on the playlist at LEAST once/hour till lights out. Summer of '80. My God that seems an age ago but I remember clearly... "THAT is a kickass tight band."

I have heard from other experienced musos who have seen TP and The Heartbreakers that this band is one of the tightest going around. RIP

Like many we were shocked to learn TP was gone. Too young actually.
Have to remind one's self that this is a reality.
Damn The Torpedoes was seminal.
The music had all the right elements, lyrics.
So many great albums and songs.
Saw TP&THB live winning radio tickets for being a fan-boy.
Inside TP's home with another gone too soon Garry Shandling, a BTS artist's POV.
