With music the most popular music of the day being so lame young listeners have to be starving for something interesting and exciting. I have to think that there are still a lot of music aficionados and audiophiles out there.
Every so often I contact Music Choice and petition them to create a surf music channel but they ignore me. Maybe if they got more requests they would start channel for instrumental surf.

It is a shame that this original American music is not known to more people. America has led the world in popular music such are bluegrass, jazz, funk, fusion, rap, country & western folk, punk and surf. All are unique to regions and cultures in America. Like all the other genres, surf is important music.
Perhaps if you just click the links the web masters may bring it to the attention of the suits who may recognize the potential of including this uniquely American music on their platforms.
The creation of instrumental surf music is truly a labor of love and that is what is so special about it.

I frequently listen to the Underground Garage "channel" on SiriusXM, and the only surf music I've heard are short fragments played by a DJ to transition from the end of a song to his announcing. I occasionally hear a Dusty ("from the Sonics") promo for the Underground Garage, followed by a Sonics song.

The only solution is to do like the topic says- Make Surf Music Mainstream. Sirius XM and the Underground Garage are one my main objectives for my 2nd album. I'm going to approach Kid Leo a fellow Buckeye and FM pioneer from WMMS The Buzzard.
I have a plan and it is a long shot but that's alright. His is one of the best shows in the Garage and I've got something that should rock him from the Cuyahoga to Sandusky and back again.
His show is 4-7 weekdays. Wild Weekend is his bumper music.

young listeners are not paying too close attention to what they're hearing in my experience. And if they are, they're blooming punk rockers.

I've studied Sirius XMU, the edgy new unsigned band channel and after about 10 days felt I needed deprogrammed. It was rough. 3/4 of the songs sound like they were recorded through 6 layers of sound deadening wool. The beats are so bland and horrible stumbling about like a robot missing half of it's gears. Industrial without the charm.
And then you just wonder about a beautiful song by St. Vincent called New York notable because it has a gentle diva crooning the word 'motherf--ker' over and over. Is that what makes it popular? Mindless.
The pop world has lost it's rudder and the kids are taking turns holding each other under the water. Someone needs to break out the floaties and water wings.

Surf music was barely mainstream during the height of its popularity. Trying to make it mainstream today will be difficult, but I cheer and support anyone who is trying and let me know how I can help.
Agree that most kids today with shorter attention span and tons of new songs coming out today are not really interested in creating their own music scene. That is the key. Even in the 80s we were trying to separate ourselves from the 70s disco and classic rock, that's why I was in the New Wave scene, going to clubs, watching bands and learning, trying new guitar sounds and writing non-stop. Today, although a lot of kids are "songwriters", everyone's kid plays an instrument, writes music and pops it on the Internet radio, etc... but a lot of it is just regurgitating the same stuff on the Disney Channel, or on their playlist instead of trying to separate themselves. (LIKE the Cosby/Sinatra days the focus is on the individual singer, not the genre of music) Plus there's just so much out there it's hard to grab a market share or differentiate your sound for any amount of time.

There is a very long list of music genres without a chance of getting main stream attention. In addition to instrumental surf music add Hawaiian. Every time I renew my XM subscription I tell them to add these to the channels. As mentioned there are multiple sources for listening from your mobile device. I like Tune In and Radio Garden.

That's exactly what I do. I've been on the same rate since I started. They have pointed out that these genre are often played on Margaritaville channel. True, but I want them all the time like Pandora, which is also owned by XM... Dang.

Wish we were all rich 1%'ers then we could start our own surf channel, put in on XM and try not to squabble with each other dividing the profits. Maybe call it "mainstream surf you kids are gonna love...", maybe not

I only have to pipe up in defense of Annie Clark. Sure, New York and probably that whole album is uber poppy, but in general, she's about a quirky a musician as they come. Some of her stuff is borderline unlistenable because it's just so damn awkward.
Also: there's a reason she has a signature guitar too. It's not her looks, although she is pretty easy on the eyes.

The Underground Garage is why I am in surf. They played 'Flight of the Surf Guitar' 3 years ago and changed my life.

And this way I can better monitor the Culture. I need options.

As the father of a 14 year-old I concur; kids these days are lost in the limitless swamp of 'musical' overproduction WORSENED BY the instant availability of the entire catalogue of every bit of music ever recorded. It's impossible for them to define themselves as previous generations did by selecting distinctive styles in exclusion of everything else. It's like that Eagles' song, "Life in the Fast Lane" - Everything, all the time.
I predict the one who attempt to really save themselves will just unplug and reject all recorded music.
