Hello folks,
finally got my hands on the more or less standard guitars for surf.
Same procedure as last time You can guess which track was recorded with which guitar. Here's a picture and a short description:
From left to right: Fender - Jaguar Thin Skin (US); Fender - Jazzmaster (Japan); Fender - Stratocaster Am Std.; Mosrite - Mark I Reissue.
I've used the bridge PU on the Mosrite, Middle on the Strat and both PUs on the Jaguar and Jazzmaster. Recorded through a Gomez G-Spring into a Crate Powerblock, direct out into console/computer. Please excuse the sloppy playing and quality. If you find any mistakes, you are welcome to keep them.
More questions? Feel free to ask. Here's the link. Happy guessing

Guitar 2 - Jazzmaster
Guitar 3 - Strat
Guitar 4 - Jaguar

Guitar 1: Mosrite
Guitar 2: Jag or Jazz
Guitar 3: Strat
Guitar 4: Jag or Jazz
Guitar 2 sounded like a JM until Guitar 4 came along, then I wasn't so sure.

I have no idea but it brought back memories from the 60's. I only had a few 4 track tapes and that song was on one of them.

I thought all 3 Fenders had mellow tones on those recordings, tones that would not be heard through the mix in a live performance. Now I understand why Fender amps have seemed shrill to me. The trebly Fender amp compensates for the lightness of treble in the guitars, at least with the pickup choices Sancho used. Of course, everything is relative, a Fender fan might consider my guitars too trebly and my amps too mellow.

Thanks for making the test. All sound very good.
My guess:
1.Mark I
2.Jazzmaster
3.Stratocaster
4.Jaguar
I'm always obsessed with sound. And It's funny, after i spent a lot of time on Surfguitar101 i found myself analyzing every guitar tone i hear, anywhere, in all media, wherever i go. I really enjoy thinking about how the end result tone could be achieved, always surmising the guitar and pick up selection.
SurfGuitar101 is definitely a place to learn.

Damn, I was 100% sure that the first one was a Strat... No one else seemed to think so.
When will you post the results?

Our beaches here get 3 foot tall waves, but it doesn't matter. You don't need to surf to play surf.

The results are:
- Mosrite
- Stratocaster
- Jazzmaster
- Jaguar
I think the most noticeable tone comes from the Mosrite. Almost anyone got that right.
The Strat is also very easy to spot, if you know a Strat's tone.
The Jazzmaster and Jaguar are more similar although the Jaguar sounds much more bell like while the Jazzmaster sounds like a grown up guitar.
Hope you guys had fun =)

As usual, that was fun & exceptionally well done.
I book-marked this for the next time a thread pops up, "What guitar for surf?"
Great job amigo!
