I want to get myself into a Mosrite on a smaller budget. I am interested in the Excellent Japanese reissues (solid color preferred vs sunburst) or maybe even one of those Avenger models. I would be interested in Hallmark too but only the 65 custom with the bolt on neck. I am not a fan of matching headstocks.

What manufacturer or brand are you looking at? And what is your price range?

I was hoping to keep it in the realm of $1000 and under. The Fillmores are just too high for my blood although I am sure they are worth it. I was looking for a Kurokumo made Mosrite probably or I guess maybe a Fillmore Ranger might fit my budget. I have no idea what they go for these days I haven't seen one in awhile. Avengers seem well within my budget but honestly I am not sure what the quality is like on those. So I guess I am first looking for a Kurokumo Excellent but anything within my lower budget I would be interested in hearing about. Like I said I would be interested in a Hallmark too but the 65 custom with the bolt on necks (which I would want) don't seem to have been bought in enough quantity to hit the used market yet.

Johnny,
From what I've seen recently on EBAY, the models you are looking at are well over $1,000.00 - to the tune of $1400-$2000. There is a black Mosrite Avenger presently on EBAY under $1,000 but unless you can see the instrument first hand or can get a trial period, I'd steer clear of Avengers. I've had a few and most didn't have the proper neck tilt (what a difference a few degrees of tilt make) when bolted to the (cheap) body. The action was just too high. The pickups weren't that great, either.
From what your budget indicates, I'd save my pennies and get a Hallmark.
Another Johnny...

The Excellent models are selling for over $1000? Not the supers but the standards? That's kinda crazy money for an Excellent. I had no idea. I have seen them listed for that amount but usually not selling. And the Rangers are over $1000? I thought they were only $1100 new (or less) a few years ago.
Thanks for the info Johnny!

The Hallmark is already within my budget so I guess maybe that is just the way to go. Figured I would look for one of the budget Mosrites first

Can't go wrong with Hallmark. Just email them about the custom 65s. They have them just not on the website.

I could go up to $1200 but I guess I have a hard time paying high prices for the low end copies. At that point the Hallmark seems like the best way to go. Is an Excellent a much better guitar than the Hallmark? I assumed that the Ranger, Excellent and Hallmark were all on par with each other.

I have a Hallmark C60 (non-bolt on neck though)in Pearl White that I'd consider selling. I've had it listed on CraigsList in the past but pulled the ad after a week or two. Had second thoughts about letting it go. PM me if it sounds at all interesting or if you'd like pics or additional details.

There is nothing low-end about a Kurokumo Excellent Mosrite Ventures guitar. I paid $1500 for one used and consider it a good deal - like new + 20 yrs old vintage.
And the Excellent is a very different axe from a Hallmark, which though nice and all, are more of a modern instrument and do not sound or feel like vintage Mosrite. The Excellent does.
The only "cheap" thing about my Excellent is the lack of polish to the bearing housings of the vibrato tailpiece and the lack of smooth counter-sink to the string holes on the back of the tailpiece. Both of these issues can be fixed in half an hour with a Dremel. I suppose honing these details would drive up production costs. You have to go to a Super Excellent for that detail.

Low-end was the wrong term. I just meant that they were more affordable (when they were available in the USA) then the Fillmore Mosrites. Guitar Punk sold the Excellent models for $1400 in the early 2000's and when Fillmore became the only brand to get in the USA they were over $2000 until the Ranger line came out. I have played Mosrites from the Kurokumo factory and they were all really nice.

Thanks for the offers I got. I located an Excellent (with the Ventures logo...don't know if they all had those or not) for within my budget.
