Mix in a venue right on the beach, some sun, 70 plus degree temps, surf, and an epic surf band. You have a good feel for what took place this past Sunday at the HB Pier. Granted, only one original member is left in the band but when you see the opening acts stick around to watch the last band & lots of other musicians who are not even playing that day show up to watch, you know itâs going to be good. It was.
This was traditional surf music played in the traditional way for the most part. Paul âMr. Motoâ Johnson & Ron Eglit compliment each other nicely on guitars. Dave Raven rips on the drums. Rob Watson is smooth on the keyboards & ads some nice touches. Jay Truax plays the bass like the old pro he is. Jim âMr. Wipeoutâ Fuller was up there too playing rhythm for the most part. Several times I had to wonder if he even had his guitar turned on. Then he played lead on Wipeout complete with all the 60âs licks. The crowd loved it. People were even dancing.
People can say these guys are old, not the real deal or whatever. To me these guys were & are part of the gold standard for surf music. You can really tell when a band likes playing together and performing. These guys obviously like both.
It was like going back to 1963. I was sorry it had to end. Treats like this are far too rare.

Here's a photo I snapped (or in today's terms, an image I captured ) of Paul and Ron playing Miserlou:

Absolutely! It wasn't my first time there, my wife and I have going to the HBSM concerts for years on the days that Paul plays, either with the Surfaries or the Duo-Tones. I prefer the smaller shows in the HBSM parking lot.

I enjoy both. I like the atmosphere at the museum. It's fantastic that people drive an hour or more to see these wonderful shows. At the pier I like the fact that we get to see a longer show with more bands & they turn the volume WAY UP! It's great we have a choice.
Another suprise for me were the Planktones. I had no idea what to expect. It was a nice contrast with Marty Tippons on the Morsorite Vuntures Guitar & Bill McGlynn playing the Strat through a Fender Vibrolux (I think). The Morsorite was a bit overmodulated on a few songs which may have been the sound system or maybe the settings on the reverb tank. Bill McGlynn sounded perfect. His solo on Sleep Walk was, dare I say it, soulful? Bill sounded just fantastic. I have only seen Bill McGlynn play a few times but I am more impressed everytime I see him play. Bill is one of the people I'll now go out of my way to see play.

Paul Johnson was worth the whole afternoon. What a smooth and precise guitar player! Ron added a lot of life to the group and the performance, but I was entranced by Paul's guitar work.

Rev,
I heard several other very acomplished guitarists make very similar statements. What else can we say except PJ is very gifted. Bringing Ron into the Surfaris was a brilliant move. Ron's personality & performance can't help but bring a smile to your face.

Have you heard Paul play with Gil Orr (of the Chantays)? Gil is also very talented, and they play all this stuff together as the Duo-Tones. They play both electric and unpluged, trading off lead and rhythem.

I'm hip to the Duo-Tones... Have their CD, caught their appearance at the first Surf Museum benefit many years ago at the Hard Rock in Newport Beach (they did their act with electric guitars that day). Also managed to record their appearance on Prairie Home Companion. So I guess you can say I'm a fan!
