Jimmy Paragallo plays an awesome version of Torquay by The Ventures.
Jimmy also provides a slow version and the rhythm section to play along with.

Torquay was originally a Fireballs song.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Indeed Torquay was written by George Tomsco, Fireballs lead guitarist.

What does Torquay refer to? The town of Torquay, England hosted the water sports events of the Olympic games in 1948. Torquay--a hit in 1959--is the earliest instrumental I know of with a surf related title that is twangy and reverby.

I believe there is a town in Austailia with the Name Torquay that has a good surf break.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Good guitar playing but this video illustrates how important an appropriate drum track is to achieving the sound most of us are after.

You are indeed correct, Squid. Torquay's story can be heard from George Tomsco himself. He likes to tell the background stories of his tunes before and after he plays them. I was fortunate enough to play rhythm guitar for the Fireballs when they came through Phoenix one time. It was a dream come true for me, the huge Fireballs fan that I am. If you haven't bought the Fireballs' latest collection, you really should. There are a few unreleased gems on there and I called George a few days ago to get the story on those tunes. He's always willing to talk about the good old days when instrumental music was actually a hit on the airwaves.

Here's the latest CD that I highly recommend that includes all of their instrumentals: http://www.superoldies.com/norvajak/CDs/fireballs/fireballs.html

Wow, Matt, you made my day just hearing about your wonderful adventure performing in the Fireballs. That's a wish come true.

I bought Fireballs recordings in vinyl when they came out, including 45s of Bulldog, Nearly Sunrise, and Chief Woop-in-Koff, and the LP album Torquay. The LP includes a cover of Wheels. I also have the String-A-Longs LP album Wheels with a cover of Torquay, and the Wide World Hits LP recorded by the Fireballs under the name of The String-A-Longs.

Squid, George told me Eric Budd got drafted into the army in 1962, so they had a session guy, Doug Roberts, who later became the drummer full time after that (those) album(s) in 1963.

Wow, you have had the records since they came out!? Awesome!!!
