Just putting together some cool, classic examples of surf instro or surf vocal tunes with harmonic tremolo...what other examples?
I never really understood the allure of the vibey harmonic tremolo (where there is both a bit of pitch modulation and the typical volume modulation) until I played a real brownface Super. I find that identifying harmonic vs the more common use of bias/tube trem is more difficult when the speed is high.
- The Beach Boys - Lonely Sea
- The Chantays - Wayward Nile
- Fender IV - Malibu Run
- The Chantays - Pipeline (on the lead guitar...an oft-forgotten effect when bands do covers!!)

Same here sometimes; for me it's very much a mood effect (although I like it quite a bit). Experimenting recently (same amp as you & because I'm using a SurfyTrem pedal instead of a Brownface amp) I find myself kicking in a little GEQ at room volume at the end of my chain (before the tank/after the Trem) to "kickstart" the drip so it isn't totally washed out. The treble drip-tip came from Danny and the setup of the GEQ came from Crazy Ace Jeff quite awhile ago. I dislike bright switches & that little GEQ has been indispensable sometimes.
But harmonic trem is the ticket for alot of stuff. Thanks for the thread & links.

Yeah, the Bright switch on my 68 Custom Vibrolux doesn't get used either. It also interacts poorly with fuzzes (when I do use them occasionally). I have used boosters and preamps in front of my reverb unit but I find the best sound is going direct from guitar to reverb. It just seems to be slightly more responsive, dynamic, and hi-fi. So, when I use other pedals for live use I see it as managing a compromise. I go to my tuner, then my Klon Klone, then out to my reverb, and then back again into my El Capistan>Flint>EP Booster. I prefer the sound of reverb-->tremolo and then I found out that this is the routing of the signal in the Brownface amps. Cool!
Unfortunately, impatience kicked in and I was not able to hold-out for the not-quite-ready-yet release of the Surfy Trem so I went with the Flint. When the time comes for the Surfy Trem to hit its regular release I may still consider it depending on the price and format.

That sounds pretty cool Ivan. Right about the spendy part too. I'm sure they'll sell though.
