Permalink Any surf tunes or 60s instrumentals with 12 string?

I have a 12 string electric I'm dying to put in live rotation.

Guitarist for Black Valley Moon & Down By Law

Al Casey was famous for using a 12-string Electric Guild. When I saw him play the entire Surfin' Hootenany Album live, he played at least 2 of the tunes with that. Here's his version of Baja from 1963 with that very 12 string.

There are more gems on the album here. There are a few with the 12.

It's a somewhat rare album, but Hiroshi Tsutsumi and His Allstars Wagon "Hit Tunes by Electric Guitar" features a 12 string doing a lot of the lead guitar.

Here's one of the tracks, "Murasaki No Yoake" (Purple Dawn)

It's a fantastic album, we'll worth hunting down!

We've played "Wild Action" by The Ventures since our band's inception.
It always goes over well.
Fun tune!

You saw him perform the Surfin' Hootenany album? I'm envious! That's one of my favorite original surf albums. I never considered that he used a 12 string. That has to be a contender for the earliest.

Carl Wilson was another early user of the 12 string (Rickenbacker).

The final Surfaris track from the '60s had the 12-string rhythm guitar. (Ron Wilson was no longer on drums.)

Is "Mr Beatle" by Satan's Pilgrims a 12-stringer?

It is-a Vox! As are Tomorrow Night's Mourning and Rainy Day Green Stop Sign from Psychsploitation. They're not surf or 60s, but thanks for asking?

I think Tahiti Shuttle Experiment played a Strat 12 string lead. As I recall watching them live it was some amazing playing, but I only saw them once and might be confusing this with another band on the bill.

Amped up my desire for a rwelve.

Dick Dale's Watusi Joe was on a 12 string. The melody is a rip off of the the song Money made famous by the Kingsmen (I think-probably wrong recollection).

Mel and Danny, Hiroshi is right up your alley...thanks to psychaonaut for posting this...

"Untitled Pop Anthem" on Breaking the Sound Barrier by Rondo Hatton features a Dano 12 string.

Not 60's, or straight up surf, but it is one of my all time favorite guitar instros. I'm not even sure if it's a 12string or they just simulated one somehow...

Hank Marvin occasionally played a Burns Double Six, 12-string.

I think he used it on the track Maroc 7.

A Shadows aficionado at the Surfer Joe festival last year told me Hank only played the 12 string live with Cliff Richard, and all recordings were double tracked harmony playing.

Carl uses a 12 string live at the following url. Fast set and Carl is jacked up!
