Permalink The Halibuts - Live footage from Oct 1986

I know there were a few comments in the recent J&tN video thread about other gold nuggets the uploader had, but I felt it was sacrilege to not create dedicated video threads for some of them.

Enjoy nearly 20 minutes of The Halibuts!

That was neat!

I think all these videos are from the South Bay Surf Band Reunion from 1986. I have a copy of a copy of that somewhere on VHS...

I'd say you're right, B.

(And apologies it's not 20 min of Halibuts, the legends mega-jam kicks in for a good chunk of this clip)

Interesting side note... notice in the credits where it was filmed???

That's right, ALPINE VILLAGE! The ORIGINAL SG101 convention Big Grin

And...I think you sent me a DVD copy of your VHS version.
I remember being pretty excited when I got it, and then a bit let down out of how out of focus it the whole thing is.

Upon careful review (thanks Gmail!) it seems I received a DVD-R of that show from you Chris! Thanks again! And it was amazing finding a conversation from 2005 between us.

I remember emailing Paul Johnson about the possibility of that show getting a wider release. He really wanted to do it, but it would take a bunch of time and money.

Not to mention the 80's style cheesy public-access television graphic effects!

Still it was an amazing document!

Hmmm. I wonder who I got it from? Maybe HBKahuna.

It strikes me that these 1st wave guys are all in their early 40's here.

I had bought it and as we have VHS instead of NTSC it was fairly expensive to purchase it 30 years ago.
Very good interview parts are in the original video as well,
enjoy David Marks how he explained the failure of his group The Marksmen...

Yes, Jeff/BTD pointed that out during the SG101 Convention last year.
Fortunately, Alpine Village has upgraded the stage since 1986.

The Halibuts are on that literal short-list of bands that give me happy feet & can change my disposition for the better, every time.

Interesting from over 20 yrs ago.

Cool

I think I misread my email. In it, you tell me you just transferred your copy to DVD-R and you are offering me a copy. I just checked my stash of VHS tapes and I have 2 copies of the South Bay Surf Band Reunion along with some Penetrators footage (Redlined video). So the mystery deepens. If I had to guess, I'd say I got my copy from Ivan. I then sent it to somebody (you?) who made a copy. After you transferred it to DVD did you send it back? I did not have the means to make VHS copies back then, so it's quite confusing as to how I ended up with 2 copies. Maybe I'll post a photo and see if anyone recognizes their handwriting.

I may have also gotten a copy from Paul Johnson. He might have been offering them on his website at one time. Weird how my email searches are not turning anything more up.

Halibuts were also regulars at the Toes Tavern in Redondo Beach - saw them there a few times in the early 1990's.
Saw Dick Dale shows there on two separate dates in the early 1990's - pre Pulp Fiction. Small club, so it was very intense.
Insect Surfers opened the show for one of the dates.

I guess we need to start a South Bay Surf Band Reunion thread. We have talked about it before in bits and pieces but would be good to have a single thread devoted to it with all the videos. Or maybe someone can make a YouTube playlist of the videos.
