Pedal Steel and Steel Guitar Surf/Instrumental

While we're thinking of surf and instrumental style crossovers...Surf sounds great on steel guitars. Saw an incredible steel player in a Nashville club last year do an outstanding surf medley...even creating sounds of waves and seagulls!

There's a guy who comes to the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association convention every year from Southern California who has a steel with a Strat trem on it. He always does a surf medley. I don't know if he has a band back home.

Neither are surf bands, but both instrumental and incorporate some surf elements.

What about The Goldtones from the first wave. Some kid named Glen Campbell (not that Glen Campbell) plays some wacky steel on 2 tunes "Strike" and "Gutter Ball". One of those tunes is actually "Pipeline"! Pretty crazy stuff.

I saw Phantom Frank of the Phantom Four use a steel guitar a couple of times during live concerts. Sorry couldn't find a video of it on the interweb.

Oh yeah, I've used a Fender lap steel on a couple of tracks on our Rondo Hatton cds in the past. I'm going to cut an original hula tune for our new one soon, FWIW.

I've been playing lap steel for about 2 months now. I recorded this version of Sleep Walk about 2 weekends ago. I'm pretty proud of how it turned out considering this was around the 6 week mark.

This isn't surf at all, more ambient than anything else, but I really like a group called "Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel". It reminds me a little bit of The Man from RavCon at times.

There is a fantastic series of articles on the Misunderstood in Ugly Things magazine ....I think the publisher even wrote a book about them . Incredible story of a SoCal 60s band who went over seas looking for fame , found some , then were broken up by the draft for Vietnam ... interesting story from that takes ya from San Bernardino to Bhutan ..
