Permalink Playing Dick Dale's "The Victor"

New Topic

This is my attempt at Dick Dale's "The Victor" from his '64 Capitol album "Mr. Eliminator". The heavy middle-eastern atmosphere was very influential on my playing as well as on the Madeira as a whole (we covered this song on our '06 EP "Ruins"). Dick was very innovative in his playing here, relying not only on a great deal of double-picking but also a lot of hammer-ons and pull-offs, not so easy with the very heavy strings he uses. (I was listening to the original track on my iPod and played along.) Enjoy!

It's a deal! Thumbs Up Can't wait in particular to hear "Journey to the (Slightly Off) Center of Southern Michigan" - that really ought to be something! Wink

Yes! Actually my favorite DD song, bar none.
Damn, that was pretty! Thanks - the power of working the same notes further up on the thicker strings really comes through & there's no comparison (imo) to playing them somewhere else.
Thumbs Up

Nicely done Ivan, You can certainly chop down trees with the best of them! (Dick Dale speak that is) At this point I can't help asking about Banzai Washout which I discovered through John Blair, I really love Dicks version especially with the upside-down chops. Did Dick write Banzai Washout? Sorry if I'm slightly off topic, just something I wanted to know for a while.

Off Topic
Banzai Washout was originally done by the Catalinas. Steve Douglas has writing credit. I think Steve was a session guy who worked with Dick Dale which is probably how he picked up on the tune. I think the Catalinas were a studio group: Bruce Johnston, Jerry Cole, Billy Strange, Leon Russell, Hal Blaine, and Steve Douglas.

Thanks, Wes and crumble! And Brian is of course completely right. We play Banzai Washout in the Blair-Pongracic Band, and I initially assumed we were doing Dick's version. I asked John about it at some point, and he said he always preferred the Catalinas original version! I can't quite say I agree - Dick's tone and playing on that track is pretty amazing, so I gotta give the edge to his version. (Incidentally, Steve Douglas, the writer of the song, was a sax player, and I believe he was the guy that played on pretty much all of Duane Eddy's big hits!)

Danny and I have been having a conversation about this over on Facebook, but suffice to say, I feel very honored that Danny took the time to learn this (difficult) song so closely! I love it! Thank you very much, Danny!!! You did a fantastic job!
