I've seen DD go thru 3 picks in one song.

That's really cool hearing the isolated guitar and seeing you play it. It shows what a physical style that is. Do you ever feel like a keeper of the flame? Even within the relatively small community of surf guitarists, there aren't many who can do that sort of picking the way Dick Dale did. I mean, you do it better that he does it now.

I've recently acquired a completely stock 1965 Bandmaster and considering upgrading the output transformer. Does everyone typically upgrade to a showman/twin output transformer?

No, typically the Bandmaster is upgraded to a Bassman OT. I personally put a Mercury Magnetics one in my mine, with a 4,8 and 16Ω tap that I installed a rotary switch under the chassis.

Very impressive!
This song is an ever present item on my practice playlist (together with Misirlou and Night Rider). I never get it spot on, but when I get in the vicinity, I know I have practiced enough to get through our real setlist without double picking problems. (Same goes for "Point Break" by the Bambi Molesters for muted rhythm stuff.)

Thanks, Simon!

Well, thank you greatly, though Dick is now nearly 80, so that's not really a fair comparison! Big Grin Interesting question about the 'keeper of the flame'. I don't think I consider myself that given that such a term implies that I am the only one doing so, and clearly there are quite a few people out there that still greatly appreciate DD and are influenced by him. This is really mostly for myself. I do greatly enjoy and get a lot of pleasure from emulating the styles of my heroes as closely as possible, whether Hank or DD or the Atlantics or Jim Messina or whomever. I think my deeply OCD nature leads me to do so more closely than most - and I think I've been blessed with a good ear to allow me to 'decode' those sounds and sufficient talent to be able to recreate them. It's like school work - study and practice it at home, but then go out in the real world and use the lessons learned for yourself. I hope my own style doesn't sound derivative of any of those guys since I mix it all up into something hopefully a bit different. But I do try to know my roots.

The painful experience of seeing a video of Sammy Hagar trying to play a surf tune in that style had me thinking about what a specialized thing Dick Dale style really is. I would dare say that most accomplished guitarists can't do it unless they put the time in, and don't get to your level unless they put many years into it. As you say, it must be studied and practiced, and you bring a diligence to it that is somewhat unique I feel.

As the third (or whatever) wavers get into their 50s, I don't see a lot of younger players taking it up. Maybe I'm wrong. Many here are more plugged into the scene than me. I wonder if it's unfounded to have any concerns that the technique played well could fall by the wayside in the future.

Anyway, I do think you are successful in finding a personal sound. Although your covers of your heroes are amazingly faithful, I don't think anyone can mistake your playing for anyone else's today.

yes but he uses those soft plastic fender picks ...I tried them and they ground down very quickly for me too ...but not 3 per song!
