Sorry I'm not going into detail.
Brian has already mentioned SG101's membership numbers of which there are many. For whatever reason most are only active for a short while.

That condition exists on almost any internet forum.

That's a generalisation and a smooth over. Obviously I have caught a nerve here but I am not trying to attack SG101 It was a logical suggestion, an idea which with some discussion could make SG101 stronger if anything.

Crumble, I still don't really get what you mean. The only "problem" I see, which constantly arises with new members, is that they are sooner or later told to use the search function, which may come off as uninviting. On the other hand: as much as I am a surf geek, I can totally understand that certain topics have been discussed to death, so a hint at older threads is still better than no answer at all.

(And then there were people like TJ Austin, but I think, that is a problem that cannot be solved Wink .)

Simon I'm thinking about folks that are interested in surf music but for whatever reason don't gel on SG101, perhaps other Europeans who might get a foothold on a European forum better. I only mentioned Surfmusic.de because it appears to be dying and the structure is already there. It would be good for European tour dates and news. SG101 American based tour news is of little interest to me because the action is too far away. To have a more localised forum tailored to our European needs but interconnecting with SG101 at the same time with a slightly different philosophy to what we are used to here.

Ah, now I get it, especially the thing about the tour dates! I almost never post dates here for that reason (only few German members), but maybe there even is the possibility to customize the SG101 calendar to show only dates in your vicinity? (Never used that one either Embarassed .)

I used to post German and European dates over at surfmusic-forum.de, whenever I stumbled upon them; maybe I should start doing that again and extend my acitivity...

SG101 should be a world-wide resource. If you want to submit news and/or tour dates for your European dates, PLEASE do so.

Surfmusic Europe can be a world-wide resource also! You're very welcome to visit and read our European tour dates!

I'd be glad to setup a European Surf Music Scene sub-forum here at SG101 and see if it gets traction....?

Otherwise it isn't too hard to get your own forum going. Keeping it going is much harder.

To transform the surfmusic-forum into something more international it would take someone, who would be willing to put a lot of time and effort into it, like Brian does with SG101. And AFAIK Ehrie, the founder and admin of the forum, has had very little time on his hands during the last years.

It's pretty hard to find someone as generous with his time as Brian is. Most people start forums but eventually get bored with them and move on. We are all very fortunate to have Brian running this place the way he does! So, though of course European surf fans can do whatever you want, I would think Brian's offer of a Euro-surf sub-forum would be your best bet to have something active and long-lasting. I think that's a very nice offer!

That would like separatist.

I'm having fun thinking out loud Brian.. I Didn't really intend to go so far off topic.

Yeah I'm just spit-balling too.

Would it "help" if we added sub-forums for Europe, Latin America, Asia...?
Or would that just further sub-divide us for no real good reason?

I see why some would like Sub-forums,
But as Brian says it just further divides us.
I like reading about Mexico, South America, European, etc.
Tours and or releases on here.

One of the things I hate, and knew would happen when I got on FB.
I found 20 plus Surf Forums,
No way I can read them all.
But that's what happens when any joe can start a FB group.

I like this site the way it is! Isn't already international? I agree that many of the "advertised" activities are American based (and some cultural references pass me by!) but there's nothing stopping us Europeans putting stuff up here.

In general I've used a number of forums for different topics (technology, art) and I recognise the scenario of certain members "bossing" the posts. This forum is by miles the friendliest most useful one I've ever encountered. If it ain't broke.....

How about geographic-based subforums just on the Show Announcements forum?

Or a region-based filter option for the calendar?

(Belated New Year's resolution: post dates on SG101 and put them in the calendar!)

Well... I could add a calendar for each continent or something. But if you use the filters to remove the radio shows you'll see there really aren't that many shows on the calendar. So not really sure having more regions is worth the trouble.

Yes yes yes... there are other guitar forums.

But do they have 1637 forum threads comparing reverb pedals to reverb tanks?? Huh? Do any of those forums have this beautiful animated emoji??

Dead Reverb

No. No they don't.

That is why SG101 is the best!!!

Now if only we had a search function here... (I kid, Brian. I kid!)

I think that if people from Europe, weather in a band or not. Posted info about European tours and or one off shows. We might have a better picture of what is going on over there.

No rule about having to be in said band, to post the info or the flyer.
Plus, if you post it, maybe some lurker might see it and go.
And we have lots of lurkers.

I like that someone that comes here looking at Show Announcements is, up front, going to see announcements posted from all over the place. Burying things in a geographically-specific sub-forum would be counter-intuitive. Plus, they might escape the eye when cruising for new stuff; heaven knows there are already enough stickies to scroll through. I've never had the feeling that this wasn't a forum oriented to this type of music internationally (and was amazed & pleased to find it thus). This is starting to sound like a solution in search of a problem.
