Permalink real quick review of Jerry Cole w/3 balls of fire in HB

New Topic

Well,
um...
first thing I noticed about Jerry Cole was a angry little short old man,
grumbling at people and making rude comments and faces, when people said stuff he didn't like. When Linda mentioned something about Dick Dale's cd release thing later in summer(In the announcements) he made aface that looked like he had just eating something really horrible and bitter, I almost died laughing.
He was on his cell phone talking to somebody right in front of the mic.
Dusty and Mike Vernon were trying to tell him to get awat from the mic, as everybody for blocks around could here his private conversation. ha ha ha.
so I was halping set up a pop up sun shade and was walking by the band, I grabbed the mike stand, and moved it 2 feet to the side, and he yelled at me, what did you do that for, and gave me the worst evil eye I had ever seen. I asked him if he wanted everybody around the neighborhood to hear him on his phone, he said "I don't care". So I said "geeee sorry, only trying to help", at put it back in front of him.
So he had a Newer purple Strat with the lower part of the head where it say Fender cut off. I have no idea why it looked horrible.
then he had a Peavy twon combo type of amp. up on a amp stand behind him. so it was pointing right at his ears. So he could hear himself, but we couldn't. Mike Vernon was kinda loud, and Jerry Cole was very muddy and down in the mix. He played the whole first set, and not one surf song or song with Reverb( because there was no tank there)/
alot of mushy distoted guitar, for the Noodley modern songs, and covers of Obscure classic rock songs that he said nobody else had covered instro wise. I had no idea what song it was, as did nobody else I asked.
he did have some clean R&B, bluesy songs, but again no surf in my book. Not a bad guitar player. but another one of the guys that has morphed over the years into a guitar hero wanna be.

very very sad in my opinion,
I'd like to see some other opinions here by people that were there.
Tony, Bill McGlynn,Kristena, Linda, Photog Rich...

Maybe I was turned off to him by his attitude before he played.
but i just had a bad feeling for awhile that it wasn't gonna be what I wanted to hear.

Okay I'll plunge in here BTD...When I first arrived Jerry Cole came and introduced himself and then I ran into Mike inside. Both were very pleasant and thanked me for inviting them to play. First of all Jeff let me apologize on Jerry's behalf, I think if he had known your were one of my helpers he would've treated you better. I'm sorry I didn't see or hear it happen or I'd have laid into the guy, legend or not. Throughout the day no matter what I asked of Jerry or Mike they did so willingly. It turned out to be a rough around the edges kind of day with all the comotion trying to get cars towed away, unplanned activities and palm fronds blocking a good portion of the parking lot. Before you got there we had mass confusion and problem solving to contend with. Probably when you moved the mic it was the last straw at that moment. Jerry was trying to set up and neither John nor I could find any power chords that are supposed to be in the museum. We actually had to take short ones out of my car and piece them together. All in all the day was very frustrating for me and John with all the interruptions, cars, crap to deal with, not being able to hear Jerry's guitar and being stuck with cleanup detail that took over an hour to accomplish. For me it was a dissapointment especially after Eddie's dynamite performance. I thought the best part of that show was Victor's 15 year old son Vic on the drums and of course Dusty's performance goes without saying. I was also upset with the fact I requested an extra hour to accommodate their entire set list and they quit an hour early, dismissing my audience before I could get back up to the mic and make my announcements. Somehow I lost control of that entire show and I don't intend to let that happen again. In spite of it all I was on cloud nine meeting Davie Allen for future shows and discussing the article Corky Carroll wrote about me in his column. BTW the response to Corky's column has been so overwhelming he's doing a sequel for this Sat. If you haven't read it yet go to www.ocregister.com under entertainment columns for June 23 Corky Carroll's Surf's Up entitled Dick Dale's heart is as big as his talents. It's my email word for word about Scotty, his struggles and mine and the relationship we developed with Dick which lead me to the passion I have for doing what I do at the museum for surf music with Corky's comments.

Dragonfly... You forgot to mention the motorcycle under the car interuption.

I was too late to listen to Jerry but 3 Balls of fire were smokin. Great Texas blues tones.

Is that too much reverb?

Greetings Surf Fans,

I've just posted photos of Jerry Cole and Mike Vernon and band at the
following place:

http://s52.photobucket.com/albums/g7/photog4surfbands/JERRY%20COLE%20AND%203%20BALLS%20OF%20FIRE/

As for the show, I knew when I went there that this show was NOT going
to be surf. As a purest who likes traditional surf best, the show was
disappointing. I have a wide range of musical likes from old rock to
blues and country, so I'm not so narrow minded to not be able to enjoy
good guitar work.

However, it was a treat to meet and watch Jerry Cole
play. Just the history alone was worth the drive. Jerry told me how
he hired Glen Campbell for the Champ's cut of Tequila. Being a studio
musician, he played on more rock tunes that almost any other artist.
Yes, he was a little rough around the edges but you have to admire
the career this guy has had. Don't we all wish we could play as well
as he can and make it look so easy!

True, he didn't play any surf and neither did Mike Vernon. Mike's
amp and guitar set up was way too bright to play rhythm with Jerry.
Jerry played some outstanding runs and improvs that no onecould hear.
I even asked Mike to turn his amp down or have Jerry turn his up, but
with Jerry's very mellow sound was heavily covered by the over-trebled
guitar Mike was playing. Their bassman, Vic Gerard was outstanding as
well as his son, Vic, playing the drums. Dusty's going to have some real
competition in the future. He's hot!

What's to say about Dusty, except that he didn't have much opportunity
to let loose. But gracious as usual, Dusty weathered the storm.

If it weren't for the fact that Jerry Cole was playing, We probably would
have skipped this one.

Check out the photos.

Surf's Up, Rich

I have always found, in my many years of surf music, that instro bands all kinda treat each other like one big family. EVERYBODY pulling for the same thing, to have fun, hang out with cool peeps, and play the most beautiful music on earth!!! Every surf musician I have ever met before has been awesome to be around.
The NEW members in our band are concerned with competition between musicians, like rock is, and I have assured them that it's not like that between surf musicians. It's one big happy family.
I don't understand how anyone can keep anger at a surf show. I guess there wasnt enough surf music there to keep the mood mellow.
Sorry I missed 3 BallsOf Fire, I love their music.

Those guitars Jerry is playing almost look like those Parker models. Thanks, as always, for the photos Rich!

Jerry was a very in-demand studio musician when the surf craze hit in the 60's. He was asked to do some surf style albums by record labels to cash in on the new craze. There is a SunDazed CD retrospective of this period. He's got some very cool surf songs like Midnight Surfer, but you probably should not expect him to put on a surf show these days. He probably is long past that. It is cool that he is still out playing, if I had been close I would have checked him out.

I have to say the setup playing with Mike wasn't the best for Jerry. Mike and Vic are too powerful players that overwhelmed his sound. Yes I forgot to mention the motorcycle under the car thing. What a weird day and it was a bit too hot to spend much of any time playing in the heat. I don't blame them for quitting early I just wish someone had told me they were going to do it so I could plan on it. As for the face when I mentioned Dick probably wasn't related to that at all cause he and Dick used to record together and are still friends. I must say Jerry Cole and The Chasers Cd Back to the Boards is awesome. I know I bought it yesterday and just got done listening to it. Next show on July 3rd at Pier Plaza should be really great with 9 hours and 6 bands to celebrate the holiday. Win some lose some I guess.

From the pics, I'd all but gaurantee that the sunburst was a Parker. If it wasn't, it sure as hell was an incredible knock-off of one. The purple one was a hacked-headstock strat, but the other had to have been a Parker.

I heard those things weigh like 2 pounds.

~B~

The upper bout on the Purple one made it not look like a Strat to me, but I couldn't tell what it was.

Well, I enjoyed the show. I though Jerry Cole still had it in him and was having a real good time out there. True not all surf. He even had his shirt tucked in his pants. I did not even see a reverb tank out there but, the guitar playing was great. The mixing was kinda shoddy but this guy can still pick strings. It must have been awesome to see this guy in his very young years as feisty as he is.

Jerry showed a lot of American syle roots guitar playing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It may not have been all surf right, but why do we have to turn our backs to somebody who gave such great surf songs in the past, who was key in developing this music that we enjoy so much but just do not want to play as much of them right now. Yes, I was hoping that he would play "Midnight Surfer", one of the songs we cover, but that is okay. He played enough good songs to impress me. Does anybody out there really know what Jerry Cole has done for pop music. This guy is awesome and deserves a lot of recognition.

By the way, even then Jerry was not all surf. I believe the guy has been voted to the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

Yes, I saw all that before the show - Jeff was trying to help.

I left the show a bit early. If it wasn't for the fact that I was going to Safari Sam's later, I would have stayed. When I was by the band, the sound wasn't too bad, but when I moved back by where Jeff was (near the corner), I couldn't hear Jerry, especially when he used the effects. The other thing was that none of the song titles were announced. Jerry gave info about many of the tunes, but not the titles.

I was pleasantly surprised when I went to Safari Sam's later. My friends were there, there was a tiki art show and I saw Suzy, Kirby, Squid, and others. The Insect Surfers played too and I didn't know about that before hand. I thought the overall sound of Jerry at Sam's was much better too.
