Permalink Vintage 1964 Fender Bandmaster (Blonde) - SOLD (craigslist happy ending photos added)

Like so many threads on SG101, this one has been informative and entertaining. The amp sold yesterday, so I thought it only appropriate to share the experience and wrap things up.

The day before Thanksgiving I received a response to my craigslist ad, enquiring about my availability during the holiday weekend. I replied saying I was in town and available to arrange a showing. Shortly afterwards I received another email asking if I would like to bring the amp by the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) on Friday. I checked the DPAC calendar and exchanged a few more emails. Then this happened:

Joe was extremely warm and personable and made my wife and I feel right at home. He took the amp for a quick spin (including some tasty Link Wray-style vibrato knob twiddling) and I swear the amp never sounded like that when I played it. Not even close.

Joe is the consummate gear-head and I tried my level best to keep up with the knowledge he was dropping. The whole interaction was so laid-back and non-hurried. He led my wife and I out on stage and showed us his rig. I think he could tell where my eyes kept wandering... "yeah, so that's Anton Fig's drum kit back there". Smile

So, not only did the whole transaction go smooth as silk, but the Bandmaster went to a guy who really appreciates it for what it is. I'm sure Joe has dozens and dozens of amplifiers that sit idle most of the time. But I'm also sure that he does in fact play them. And if what I heard coming out of my old Bandmaster is any indication, I'd wager they all sound effing amazing.

Shocked That is so AWESOME!!! Wow, Murph! Congrats on the fantastic experience! Joe gets a lot of crap from a lot of people and though his music is not to my taste, I've only ever heard stories of him being a super-nice guy, and a HUGE gear-head. He's very genuine about who he is and what he loves, and I've read interviews with him where he's very open about the fact that he's not in the same league as his heroes. And anyway, anybody that can make a good living playing blues guitar in today's musical environment is doing something right. Thanks for sharing this, what an ending to the entire saga!

It is a great story, but I honestly don't know who "Joe" is.

Congrats!!!

Whoa! That's too cool! It has found a worthy home.

Salud!

See this is one of those times when you can say "cool story bro" and mean it in all sincerity! Congrats!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! "Cool story bro", classic!

Apologies for not giving Joe's full name... Joe Bonamassa. A very quick overview of "who is Joe Bonamassa" can be found here.

Durham NC obviously loves them some Joe Bonamassa... the DPAC was completely sold out (on black Friday no less) and this was his 4th or 5th show in that room. I confess to not being a hardcore blues fan, but his soundcheck was insanely tight and it's obvious how much he loves playing guitar. I'm definitely going out of my way to see his show next time he's in town.

Well, that's REALLY a cool story then. I still don't know who he is, but it looks like he's quite the guitar god. This is a story that you'll pass down from generation to generation. Smile GREAT times! I'll have to listen to some of his work to get a feel. He certainly has excellent taste in amplification!!!! Congrats again!

Holy brownfaces, Batman!

Wow oh wow oh wow!

I agree with a lot of that thread about prices and such. I also agree that the Brownface Bandmaster is the cream of the crop when it comes to piggy-back amps. Having just found one again after many years, I'm happy as can be. Big Razz

At least Joe now has a Bandmaster! Buy yours before the price goes way up!!

Wow! Cool story! Congrats on the sale!

And - I think all my Bandmasters just went up in value a little. Cool

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Wow, Murph, that is a pretty cool ending to a gear sale.
I almost sold a Coronado XII to Brad Gillis, the guy from Night Ranger, but he didn't like it.
I sold two custom exotic electrics to Trey Spruance (who is famous with 15,000 people maybe worldwide) who became a friend thereby (he comped me tickets to SC3 show first).
I sold my Fulltone Tube Tape Echo to the producer of the Raveonettes' best records...
But I never sold anything to Joey Bonamassa!
I bet you got top dollar too!

Squink Out!

Great story - Congratulations & thanks for sharing.
Imagine that sets the bar for you in terms of gear-selling from now on.

Good that you got some great pictures too. If you come up to the Northland fishing be sure & hit the Blacksmith Shop Motel & Bar for one of their shirts... Cool

MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION LEFT UNANSWERED: What price did the 64 Bandmaster sell for?

I ask because there were a few different opinions submitted pertaining to the amps value (as well as best place[s] to advertise the amp.)

My opinion of the amps value came from Vintage Guitar's price guide, some took a more nostalgic viewpoint.

Many of us, at your request submitted our opinions, how about revealing the results. Much appreciated.
